Cleaning cloth advice

Hi guys

I have a habit of constantly wiping my watches when I'm out and about to make them look as clean as possible. It's usually a t shirt I'm wearing or similar

I've read that some 'soft' cloths actually have abrasive properties inside which could scratch.

Could anyone recommend a good quality cloth I could keep on me and use accordingly?

Do Rolex do anything? I'm sure someone said on here they got a cleaning cloth after a service?

Thanks in advance

I had a green microfiber cloth that came with my watch when I purchased it from Bobs that I kept at my desk and would randomly use to wipe my watch.

Over time though it began to fall apart and get all fuzzy.

I generally just use whatever I have on me at the time, but when Im at home I use the microfiber cloths that come with glasses and stuff.

I'm sure your AD will have a few of these in the back. If you smile you might get one for free

I bought some cloths from Wristclean - some of their microfiber “drying cloths” and the smoother polishing cloths.

I keep the drying cloths spread around (home, office, etc) and use them for my watches and eyeglasses. The polishing cloths I don’t use as often, usually just as part of the occasional cape cod treatment to the shiny bits.

I use a lens cloth on mine when it gets smeared. My GMT also came with a green cloth but that sits in the box. Be wary of cleaning the watch too much when out and about:

a) must surely look odd
b) higher risk of dropping it
c) unnecessarily drawing attention to it

When you get out of the shower each night, use the damp towel to lightly wipe down the watch before you put it back on. That’s all you ever need to do.

I don't take it off.

Just a quick whizz round to take off the smears.

What's odd about cleaning a watch? no different from wiping a phone clean or glasses. Pretty normal behavior

This is exactly what I do. Nothing cleans my watches or my iPhone screen like my bath towel after a shower.

I do this every morning and you're right it comes up really nice.

I just pick up smudges & smears all day for some reason

Keep contaminants away, thus reusing might not be best. Besides, the Zeiss wipes are sooo easy to use and cheap too. Great for sunglasses too! Use disposable if you want great results imho.

I use a microfiber cleaning cloth from Everest. Works a bit better than some eyeglass cleaning cloths I’ve used since it’s much larger than the typical eyeglass cleaning cloth which can be pretty small.

It is not so much the cloth, as tiny particles of grit that it may pick up and then scratch your watch. Grit/dust is everywhere. Your best bet is to use a cleaning wipe from a sealed package and discard the wipe immediately after use.

Don't clean your watch with towels and cloths that may have picked up grit. Ever wonder where all those tiny hairline scratches on polished surfaces come from? Now you know.

This is all being taken far too seriously.

In years of washing and drying watches, I have never managed to do any serious harm with a regular microfiber cloth or other clean cloth. As long as you aren't using a dirty cloth that has been lying around gathering random particles, you will be fine.

If you manage to put some hairlines on a watch, they will be taken care of at service. You are far more likely to pick up random scratches from actually wearing a watch than you are by using the non optimal cleaning cloth.

It's not that difficult. This entire new wave of over pampered watches and people going into such detail about how to dry their watches is getting ridiculous.

Here you go. I always have stacks of these at home for random stuff. I've been drying my watches with them for years.

Saw one on their sie for $9.95 and thought great.

Put it in the basket and it wanted $40 for postage.

I wouldn't pay $50 for a piece of cloth.

Some good tips here. Thanks again.

I've had excellent experience using the Mosslian ultra gentle cleaning cloths however it appears to be discontinued but they have newer cleaning cloths now which may be worth trying.

I use a soft, pre-washed leather chamois, which doubles as a great eyeglass cleaner.

Totally agree with you. I was actually given 2 cloths as free samples when buying other Everest merchandise, so if you could find an Everest AD then you could try that route.

Not sure this is a great idea since they contain isopropyl alcohol. My guess is that if the liquid works its way to the seals it could dry them out over time. Just a thought, maybe Bas or a mod has an educated opinion.
