Lady DJ 31 - is this reasonable?

Hi all,

I have been lurking around this forum for a while; been doing my research and reading people's feedback and review on the DJ model and I need some advice from everyone here. Greatly appreciate your time in advance!

To start off , I'm looking to purchase a DJ 31, blue/navy diamond dial, fluted bezel, SS with jubilee bracelet to commemorate a career milestone. I'm in my mid 30s and I'm not looking to flip this watch. I have not owned an automatic watch and I do wear my current watch collection quite often (I actually use my watch lol). I do want to purchase my watch new and ideally from an AD.

That said, I have walked into 3 different AD in Ontario and all 3 of them said no discount on this model (MRSP + TAX), 1 of which I knew gave a discount to someone I know a few years back on a TT DJ, diamond dial watch, (and then the usual BS they feed you about receiving 1 in stock, discount only happen years ago, ROLEX regulates us so no more discount, if you don't buy it now, it might not be here and you'll wait 6 months+, the price for this watch hasn't gone increase since 2016, etc.).

My question is, was I unreasonable in asking? I don't imagine women walking into these stores every day (or their s/o) and the women models r flying off the shelves, I also saw the display cases were mostly filled with 70-80% womens Rolex watches. Because quite frankly at $12,000+ cdn (post tax), I could be purchasing other things (like an Hermes bag for example). Demand for womens watches are not as high in comparison to men's?

It's not something I need to own (that's why I walked away), it's really a reward to myself. Any advice is appreciated!

These days it's no discount on anything Rolex. I had to pay full retail for my wife's datejust.

Find one you like, and enjoy it for a long time. I don't see it as an opportunity cost. A bag is not a Rolex etc. You work hard and deserve it!

My AD just told me no more discounts even on PM watches. Just picked up a YG Daytona a few weeks ago and got a discount. That’s the market now. I am sure you can get a new one from a grey dealer at a discount.

Pick an AD, go in and try the watch you want on, spend some time looking at it, speaking to the rep etc. Takes some photos. After at least 15-20 mins tell him that this is the one but unfortunately its over your budget by 15% (you choose a reasonable number) and explain that you are ready to buy today but not at the listed price. If he wont budge give him your phone number and be prepared to walk. Try this towards the end of the month.
Good luck

ADs still discount some Rolex watches. A friend received a good discount on his TT SkyDweller earlier in the year at my recommendation. Ladies DJ31 are as you said plentiful and all ADs have stock on hand.

No discount any more. Last Nov, at an AD we have a small relationship with, we were offered 12% off a Ladies DJ and just recently told nothing off.

Try the used market or check Chrono24 for watches in brand new condition.

If having your name on the Warranty card is important to you or you are looking for the full AD experience I don't think you have much choice in today's climate but to pay full retail.

Contact a TS. I was told by multiple ADs no discounts on these in June. Had one sourced BNIB by a TS from an AD with my wife’s name on the warranty card. Paid significantly under list and no tax.

I actually spent 30-45 minutes in the store trying it on (the SA was trying to sell me the 2019 rose gold model (which doesn't hold its value, nor was the combination classic imo) and we talked for a bit. She wouldn't budge, but she gave me the catalogue book when I left (nice gesture from her, or it's a nicer way of saying - here, read about why we are worth it :)

I will try your approach in another AD some other time though :)

Thank you to everyone else for your posts!

I have this exact watch for sale but unfortunately I cannot post it on this Forum because I have not been active lately. Once I meet all the new requirements I will let you know. Good Luck!

No harm in asking - but you are not likely to get a discount on that particular DJ31 because it is one of the most popular - and beautiful ladies watches.

Things have changed.

I bought my wife’s 2011 26mm datejust for 18% off retail and no tax. The AD didn’t flinch when I asked for the discount and they had to order the watch.

Fast forward to 2019 and I paid full retail plus tax for my SubC which is much more popular.

I’d try a couple ADs and shoot for 5-10% off.

I was told no discount on any ladies watch last week. My wife picked out a nice black face 31mm OP anyway and we walked out happy with that, but if she did pick a diamond dial DJ on Jubilee or something similar I was planning on using that MSRP purchase as icing when a SD43 or SkyD magically appeared with my name on it, kind of turning AD tactics around the other way.
