My First Rolex Purchase Experience
I was determined to find a Sub when I first became serious about Rolex ownership. For several months, I wasn't having any luck visiting AD after AD. It's especially tough when you don't have an established rapport with a dealer.
I walked into a Rolex AD in Salt Lake City during some work travel and my fiancee noticed the DJ 41 with the Rhodium dial and Oyster bracelet sitting in the case. It immediately caught her eye and thought it would look good on me. I never tried a Rolex on before, so I tried it on and I wasn't disappointed. This watch was stunning. Fast forward to Europe a few months later and it was time to resume my search. I started in Barcelona with no luck. No steel watches of any kind. Next up was Milan. To my disappointment, no Sub there either, but just for fun we asked for the DJ 41 we saw in Salk Lake City a few months back. The dealer I spoke with said they only had the one with the white dial. I was ready to walk out when my fiancee decided to mention the other Rolex's she bought for her sister back in the States and that we would just buy it there. All the sudden, one of her colleagues walked by, spoke some Italian to his colleague, and told us to wait a moment. He goes downstairs and returns a couple minutes later with the exact DJ 41 I asked for. He said it was reserved for another client, but he wasn't coming to get it for another month. I presume the dealer will just get another in time. I was quite surprised and happy so I decided to make the purchase. After receiving the VAT refunded and paid the Global Blue fees, I still managed to save around $2,000 off retail after tax here in the States. I still felt guilty since I'd never spent this much on anything that wasn't a car or house. The first time I wore it at dinner I felt like a million bucks though. I love the classy, neutral color of the dial that goes with anything I wear. The fusion of contemporary and classic styling by combining the fluted bezel with the Oyster bracelet really feels like a young man's Datejust as well. I can already feel the itch for my second watch next year. Down the rabbit hole I go. |
