DD40: Platinum or WG decision

I have the opportunity to get either the PLA blue motif dial or WG silver quadrant dial DD40 from my AD. Debating whether the additional cost for the PLA is really worth it.

The PLA is such a special piece and I've admired both the PLA DD and Daytona for a while. The WG DD is also a beauty. I tried both on and of course like them both, what's not to like about either timepiece.

I'm not someone who likes the flash of the YG so that is out.

My gut is telling me that if I decide on the WG I will still want the PLA and there's no need for both obviously so I'm definitely leaning towards the PLA.

Has anyone else faced this dilemma? And what was your outcome.

Is the extra money for the PLA really worth it?

This watch will be for me to wear and enjoy and will occupy probably 80% wrist time.

Appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks.

Have tried on the platinum and gifted a WG to my dad last year for his birthday.

Really love the blue dial on the platinum and that truly sets it apart.

I hope your AD is giving you a big discount or allowing you to bundle with SS sports, otherwise definitely recommend going through the secondary market for these pieces.

If you are in for silvery tone, I think Platinum is the one. I wish Rolex come up with platinum submariner.

Don’t own either, but I would go platinum if price is not an obstacle.

This would be amazing. A PT Sub? I’d buy it.

If you buy the WG DD, I think you’d always want the PT reference. That blue with the motif is out of this world beautiful...and still remains subtle.

DD40: Platinum or WG decision

I’ve had two Pla DD’s and now a Smurf. There is something about the hue of the WG that the Pla lacks. I was in Puerto Rico last spring and a gentleman was wearing a wg dd by the pool. Of course I immediately recognized the beautiful hue of the wg. There’s a special warmth to it. With that said I’d go with the wg/blue or meteorite dual fluted bezel.
Good luck!

Platinum. I made the decision last year. Amazing feel and weight and the blue dial is special and only available on the platinum. Stealth wealth piece.

I always wonder why do platinum watches cost more than gold watches if gold raw value is more expensive of platinum...

The Platinum piece is very special. While the WG is great it does not match the Platinum in my opinion. If your AD will not do 20% off new for the Platinum I would go to the Trusted Sellers. If you want to save even more look at slightly pre-owned. I own a Platinum DD II and really like it.

Geeze I don’t know ... I’ve been jonesing for a Platinum Day date since I joined here, but something inside of me says hold off.

I agree with one of the other posts above ... once the PT piece is in your head, you’ll probably always want one. I’d go right to the top.

If you buy it at the right price, you probably won’t get hurt too badly on resale if it doesn’t work out you, but they definitely don’t hold their resale like SS references.

I’d definitely want a significant discount from MRSP through an AD or otherwise, check the trusted sellers here to get an idea of fair market price.
I believe I saw a Dd2 in Platinum for under $40k and the DD40 for under 50k.

Good luck deciding

White gold. The flute bezel pops more. I have never been a fan of a smooth bezel dd40. But with that being said I don’t think it would ever be in my budget to spend platinum money on one watch haha. I’m too cheap.

Prefer Platinum due to smooth bezel. Had some nice weight to it, the whiteness of the metal looks better than yellowish tinge to white gold, and the ice blue is just awesome. But decent premium over WG.

To be honest, I'm a steel guy. Wish the DD came in steel and smooth bezel, and I'd be very happy

I'm not crazy about paying the sizeable premium between WG and Plat but Rolex do such a nice ice blue dial with it that for the right price I would go for it. I think that a DD looks better with a fluted bezel as it matches the President bracelet so well, so that is another concern.

Points to consider....
-it’s personal taste, but I Love the ice blue dial of PT, and it’s the signature of a PT piece.
-To most anyone, PT or WG will be indistinguishable, the beauty between the two is for the user
-the president bracelet, fluted bezel combo is unmistakably DD or at least says Rolex....even to those who aren’t WIS
-for a watch that’ll get much wrist time like you’re planning, the fluted bezel hides imperfections you’ll pick up, much better than smooth bezel.
-last point...BOTH are fantastic choices!

Yes, a DD needs a fluted bezel

Platinum is very nice but it is heavy and may not be as comfortable as the WG.

I have the WG with the silver quadrant dial.

The smooth dial on the Platinum just kills it for me. It's too plain/boring despite the fact that I like things that fly under the radar... The older Platinum DD's that had a smooth, rounded bezel look much better than the flat bezel.

I like the idea of Platinum but the price differential stopped me (I couldn't get a good discount either :( )

I have decided to wait and see what Basel brings as it is likely that the white metal DD models will be updated this year just as the Rose models were update last year.

either way you can't go wrong ;)
