Rolex DJ 41mm dark rhodium dilemma

Hi all,

I’m new to the forum so allow me to introduce myself shortly and the reason for creating this topic:
- I am a watch enthusiast (as everyone else here on the forum) and have a small collection consisting of some vintage Breitlings and other. I do not own a Rolex yet but I am currently considering my first one.
- I have decided that this will be a DJ 41mm and I’m leaning towards the dark rhodium with jubilee and a fluted bezel (with a blue dial as a close second). However, in Europe (and perhaps elsewhere) getting one is getting increasingly Difficult and they are rarely / never available at dealers to view the dial in person (Waiting lists now running over 2-3 years). So I have based my preference on the pictures and this is where the dilemma comes in:

I think the rhodium dial looks absolutely stunning in some pictures, yet a bit bland / monochrome in others. Can any current owners / specialists explain to me if this is due to lighting conditions in certain pictures and offer some insights in this regard? - any input is greatly appreciated!

Lighting conditions do vary the dial a lot. The more light, the more it comes to life.
Low light it looks almost flat black.

BUT

.....this is also the same with a lot of the other popular colours. Blue, silver, slate etc.
They all come to life in bright light, especially sunlight.

I have had mine over a year and would only consider the silver as an alternative, however a lot of people like blue.

Photo may help compare against flat black of my BLNR.

I absolutely love my dark rhodium and paired with the fluted bezel it’s tough to beat. A few pics in different lighting. I find it interesting that you don’t see many posted.

I have two watches with dark rhodium dials (neither are DJs). How they look depends completely on how the light hits them; anywhere from almost flat black, to silver, to a sun burst pattern that can take your breath away. I love the dial.

I think the blue looks better personally. If not blue, then I would go black. Good luck in your search.

Those are some stunning pictures MisterG and Soultime, really shows the differences well! I love it when it gets the dark grey hue. Seeing as I live in Paris, where there’s a lot of of cloudy weather, this would be the default as well!

Welcome to the Forum!

It is a fantastic watch - and to me, pics just don’t really do it justice. They do tend from time to time to look more monochromatic- but in the metal there is a wonderful dial to case color transition/contrast.

If you look up the silver dial DJ (in 36mm) and compare - the silver is really monochromatic, but beautiful as well nonetheless.

Happy hunting!

I just bought a smooth bezel/oyster DJ 41 in dark rhodium early this week. It's tough to photograph, but it really is a gorgeous color.

Side note, someone tell me how you're all getting these amazing pics!

Got the blue dj41 and don’t regret it. But my favorite color is blue so I am biased. Like others have said the lighting plays a big part. It definitely looks the coolest in bright sunlight.

I think under the jewelers lighting it distorts the color from what it actually looks like in true life.

I have to say that the rhodium is my absolute favourite. If I was to get a DJ it would be with a rhodium dial. I see lots of blue/black dials all the time but very few that come to life like the rhodium.

Get the DJ41 with the fluted bezel and the jubilee bracelet.

All dial colors are good. You can't go wrong.

Also debated between blue and rhodium.

I love it and it definitely changes tones depending on the lighting. Some warned of legibility issues but none for me.

I don't own it but I try it on my wrist every time I visit my Local Rolex boutique.
In few words, the rhodium is mesmerising. Pictures here are so awesome but in the metal, the DJR is 10 times more awesome than any picture.
All that said, I highly advise to see the watch in the metal along with the blue dial that is also stunning. How to do it? visit a Rolex exclusive boutique "Rolex store that sells only Rolex and Tudor". I'm sure you'll be able to see the DJ-R and DJ-B there for sure. If not in 41mm you'll find them in 36.

thank you all for the comments, really helpful! Will definitely try and go fit them at an AD even if it's in the 36 to check out the favourite!

Tried on the DJ41 with dark rhodium dial when I was on St. Thomas a couple months ago. I really liked it but just not quite enough to buy it. If they'd had the silver dial in stock ...

Rhodium is understated enough that you can go for the diamonds.

It is boring and no two ways about it. Black is bold. Blue is beautiful. Grey is awesome but it is boring.
