AD says they are “fair”

So I’ve been calling some ADs around for a Sub and 3 of them (not related) states that they do not talk about inventory over the phone and one must come in the store to find out. They even claimed that they do not keep waiting lists or a VIP system. Allegedly, if they get a SS Daytona they will even put it in their display case rather than sell them to VIPs.

Is this just BS for customers with no purchase history or do such ADs actually exist?

Well...a couple years ago I was shopping around for a new Rolex. It had been years since I bought one and wasn't aware of the whole SS sport watch craze. When I started calling around stores were pretty rude with me and talking in circles. I told them who I was and that I would spend money in their store...they didn't believe me and kept asking me to come in.

But around my part of town you have to drop big $$$$$ to get anyone's attention.

Then I dropped big $$$$$ and got put on one ADs VIP list. I said to hell with those other ADs. I will not spend my money there. Ever. There is no VIP system. It's up to the owner/manager of the store.

What would make you want to stop in and visit? If they told that everything goes in the case? Or if they tell you that everything is reserved for VIPs?
So yeah, I call BS as well.

If the ADs tell you that they will put any SS Submariner, GMT Master or Daytona in the display case, they are lying through their teeth.

That’s Bull.

All ADs I’ve walked into have yet to put any SS sports at their display since 2017. And I have not seen this waitlist.

A few years ago I called several Rolex dealers in the USA and visited a few. To humor me I was told I could be put on a "list" for a SS Daytona when I asked at 2 places local to me. I now know that was complete nonsense. For those of us without a strong purchase history with an AD, paying the going rate with a trusted grey dealer is the only way to go for a watch selling for several thousand over MSRP. While finding a highly sought after Rolex in an AD's display is a possibility, at the current time it is not likely.

You will have the same conversation if you're trying to buy the latest hot bag at LV. Trying to overcomplicate a simple high demand fashion purchase is a lesson in disappointment! Why would a salesperson care, unless you are putting money in their pocket.

Was at a AD this past weekend. They had 2 daytonas - TT one with pearl, the other white gold, a gold/blue Sub, TT Blue Sub, Gold/Black Sub, and and few YM40 and YMII steele and TT. I was pretty surprised, but it does happen. They did say for SS and GMT there is a waitlist of some sort and not expect it for some time.

I don’t see a way an AD could just put the hottest pieces in the case without alienating their best clients who want those watches. To imply there is zero preferential treatment whatsoever is an ignorant statement on the part of the SA.

If you were a loyal, long term customer with that AD and they knew you wanted a hot SS watch, what would you say if instead of ringing you they just put it in the window?

Is that a credible scenario? Is it remotely believable?

Yep. Sounds like BS..

I told one AD in Delaware I was looking for a 114060 and he told me I should come in to purchase it. Then he tried selling me a TT DJ 41 with chocolate diamond dial as an "alternative".

I’ve seen one (1) DSSD in a case since this whole thing started. Not one other SS “sports” model.

ADs do whatever they feel like, there is no one answer for what all ADs will or will not do. I would suspect that most, if not all, ADs have names of potential customers to call the second a watch comes in, so I find it unlikely that popular models make it to cases, but I don't think it can 100% be ruled out.

Depends. If the store is located in an area - have been to lower average income countries/cities - where the shop is in a relatively smaller city there is a chance they have a small VIP list. When this small list already have the watches which they wanted, then they can offer otherwise hard to come by pieces even for the "public". Have seen an example like this before. So, I would say it depends. But it's more unlikely than likely.
