Hey everyone,

I recently put a post up about me freaking out at the thought i had removed alot of metal whilst using a silver polishing cloth trying to get a scratch out - which didnt come out!!

I just cant help thinking that my lugs now look really uneven and i feel sick to my stomach thinking ive completely ruined my watch. I know stainless steel is alot stronger than silver but im kicking myself the fact ive removed metal from my watch to the point it looks uneven

I thought polishing meant on a wheel and i cant believe a cloth has made my lugs look so awful

Can i send this to rolex to be fixed?

A) There’s no way you could make the lugs uneven with a polishing cloth.
B) If the scratch didn’t come out then you’ve removed no metal, right?

I would have said the same watch looks fine,but will say to the original poster the only time any Rolex needs any sort of polishing is at normal routine RSC service time. .

Relax and take a deep breath. You didn't do any damage. Pictures don't show anything weird.
A Cape Cod isn't going to remove metal on a lug or change its shape appreciably unless you worked it for a long time. Running a Cape Cod on the brushed surfaces will definitely smooth the surface. The scratch is still there so obviously you didn't overdo it.

OP your watch is fine. I honestly do not see any unevenness with the lugs. I have used Capecod several times and while it gives a shine a removes fine fine scratches, it is not powerful enough to remove metal. Enjoy your DJ

When folks on this forum talk about overpolishing, we mean by a jeweler/watchmaker using a machine-driven polishing wheel. When used improperly, those things can meaningfully change the shape of a watch (especially over multiple inexpert polishing jobs).

As noted, a cape cod cloth won't change the shape of your watch unless you spend a long time at it. However, it does refinish the metal, and it's not going to offer nearly as nice a finish as the watch had out of the factory. The more you use it, the more that nice, even mirror finish will get distorted. And it will outright ruin the finish on brushed surfaces. It's not permanent damage, but you'll be making your watch look worse.

Scratches are part of owning a steel watch. Get it polished by an expert at service time and you'll have basically get a new watch back.

It's unlikely that you are capable of deforming your watch with a polishing cloth unless you spend an inordinate amount of time at one spot.

Practically any area can be refinished to like-new using the proper tools.

You cannot remove enough metal with a polishing cloth to cause the lugs to be uneven.

The watch looks fine.

I must’ve only done it for like 3/4 mins max! I just cant stop stressing out!

I feel like the lug on the bottom right (where the 5 is is really thin) and looks overpolished

Ha sorry about the pictures i had to crop them and zoom in loads in order for them to fit and upload!!

You’ve convinced yourself you’ve damaged it so you’re seeing something that’s not there.

4 minutes with a silver polishing cloth is only going to clean the stainless steel - nothing more
