EXPLORER 2: black vs white dial. Which one? HELP!

As its almost 2 o’clock in the middle of the night and 26 degrees Celsius here, can’t get too much sleep.

So thought I’d ask the crowd which one to choose between the two dials of EXPLORER 2 - 216570: black or white?

My other watches include: SD43, GMT 16710, IWC Ingenieur, JLC MUT, Omega SMPO.

Tomorrow I’ll pay a visit to my AD, see them both and have to decide on spot. Initially I lusted for the Polar version but only the black one was to be available so kind of growed into that. Meanwhile, they also had the Polar coming in so now it gets difficult to decide.

Here a side by side pic taken from bobswatches:

Cheers and stay safe!

Don’t know if there’s a right or wrong answer.

I’ve had both along with the Explorer. I sold the black dial to find another watch. I wear my white dial a lot but i miss the black, it will be added back to the collection soon.

I know that’s not much help but it’s ultimately your choice. If you don’t have a white dial get the polar

My personal preference. In a collection, white. As a one and only, black.

I have both and love both. The white dial is gorgeous. But somehow the black dial has a complexity to it that is just awesome. If forced to choose I guess I'd say black by a hair.

I’d agree with the black by a bit. The white is iconic and beautiful, but with the maxi dial somehow the dimensions just work better In black. I realize they are the same size, but some how it looks more proportionate in black.

I came into explorers wanting a polar, but after debating for about a month settled with the black. It just looked like it flowed better and the design some how fit better with the back dial. Not sure exactly how to describe what I’m getting at, but really can’t go wrong either way, it’s a great watch.

Prefer steel bezel with white dial.

Imho it brings the watch together.

Tough choice for sure.
I've got a Polar right now, but would like to add a black dial also.
You can't go wrong with either.

White dial. It’s the classic explorer to me plus you have Rolex SS black dials already.

I have the white and love it. I wouldn't make a different choice if I went back in time and bought it again. Having said that, I think the black is fantastic as well and more formal, making it more versatile. You really can't go wrong.

White dial on this reference. If this is going to be your only Rolex, doubtful, the black dial becomes a stronger option.

White dial is more legible and appears bigger due to white appearing bigger and the black dial has a neat ghost effect where the hands blend into the dial and appear to be floating.

Go with your heart. It seems you always wanted the white and I doubt you'll regret going with white over black.

White dial is what makes this model distinctive. It will look more distinctive compared to the rest of your collection too.

I went black dial, but there is no wrong choice here.

It’s worth considering that’s it’s a large watch at 42mm, and the white dial does make it seem much larger still.

Seriously, I would definitely go with the white dial. When you look at them side by side you can see how either would work in certain situations but all honesty, the white dial is far easier to read and there is less reflection through the sapphite so the dial doesn't disappear at certain angles in bright sunlight. I have many watches but this is my "goto" watch. You will always regret not getting the white dial if you don't get it now.

I almost bought a white but then loved the way the orange GMT hand and orange Explorer II stood out on the black dial. You’ll know when you see them together.

Please post photos of either great choice.

Probably white especially as part of collections that are typically black.

White is easier to read but the black wears better, IMO.

I’ve had both. Have white now. You have some black dial Rolex.

Go with the white. If you don’t like it you can always trade for black.

Much harder to find a good looking white dial and the polar is one of the best. Hope to add it someday.

I like the black but I love the white which I own. Gets way more wrist time then my hulk, batman, or Daytona.

Polar by a comfortable margin

The correct answer is black

(actually, the correct 'TRF answer' is both)

Except for the watch itself, there’s nothing better than pictures so here’s some that I found online:

The black dial will look smaller on the wrist. It's a big watch so I vote black.
