Sky Dweller Steel

Hi TRF fam,

Recently find myself drawn to the sky dweller in Steel, specifically the blue dial

What are your thoughts on this piece?

My main concern is the size of the sky dweller. I have a smaller wrist and this is how the sub wears on my wrist. Any and all pics appreciated

Would love you hear from you!

Thanks

I was actually surprised how big it is when I finally saw one in person. I guess the bezel made me think of other watches and so it caught me by surprise. It’s an amazing watch and its further down my priority list but I hope to have one eventually...good luck!

Here's an alternative in a smaller DJ package! 36 or 41 as shown.

You need to try it out in person, lots of ADs have PM ones so you can at least see if the size works. Getting the SkyD was getting the 9001 movement for me. If you have some experience with complicated watches, you will be instantly surprised at how easy, efficient, and bulletproof this movement is. In other words, you don’t need a manual to operate. No pushers on the case. You pretty much can’t break it.

I believe the SS blue dial is one of the most difficult watches to get. I tried on a YG Skydweller last week, and besides being very heavy, it looked too big on my wrist. My Bluesy fits just fine, but the Skydweller is big on the wrist and rather tall too, better find one and try it on first.

I'm not one for big watches, but I love my SkyDweller. Generally, I prefer nothing over 40mm, but, for me the SkyDweller works.

The SkyD can be worn easily despite its size because of the curvature of the case.
Below comparison against a 36mm case.

To big for me, had the blue dial piece for 12 months but simply never wore it. Try before you buy if you can.

The Sky-Dweller is a very special watch, especially with the blue dial.
But first try one on, it's not for every wrist.

As others have said, you need to try one on.... I don't regard the SD as a big watch at all, but then I am comparing to my Omega PO.

The SD is a great watch.

The Sky_Dweller is a great watch and at 42mm is a watch that has a lot of wrist presence. Go try one on and see. Properly adjusted you can wear it.

Another 6.75" wrist here:

As an ownership proposition, the Sky Dweller is stellar (if you like that sort of thing).

I'd say you're border line. I'm the same. Had it and tired of wearing it as it really was just too big on me.

Only thing I will add re the SkyDweller if you're used to wearing a GMT or Submariner is that it feels somewhat "top heavy" on the wrist. Those of you who have worn both know what I'm talking about. That said- an amazing watch.

I second the person that said datejust - my blue datejust 41 with fluted and jubilee is a great combo with the sub. I have seen them both in person and like the blue on the datejust better.

6 3/4" wrist and fits perfectly with its curved lugs. I travel all the time (pre Covid) and love the complications. I do like larger watches in any case.

Yes it needs to be a larger wrist as you suggest, mine is 7.5” and I was still not happy with the fit - it is a large and stunning piece.

its the best rolex, and i have owned or own at least one of every model in every metal.

currently have four sky dwellers. the silver dial yellow gold is my favourite, however the steel white dial gets worn the most. have had this one for the best part of a year and i still get excited by it.

blue dial is not for me at all, black and white are both nice, imo.

Yeah, SkyD blue is a bit big on my 6.75" wrist yet it's cool.

Having owned a 36 DD in the early 80s, the fluted bezel tricked me so that the size of the Sky D surprised me. I do really like it!

I own a black one. It's not small. If you like bigger watches it should be just fine. If at all possible go try any of them on (PM, TT, whatever) just to get some idea of size. It's an amazing watch and I highly recommend it.

Imo, I think the SubC is your limit.
Although, trying one on you may find it will work.

Also I don't think these close up pics help at all, they tend to make the watch look much bigger.

It's one of the reasons why I'm a big fan of JustOneMoreWatch, as I feel his overhead shots give a really good perspective of the watch in proportion to the forearm and how it is seen by others.

It is a big watch, I tried the TT version on and it looked great on my wrist but I just didn't feel comfortable. It is slightly bigger than a DJ 41 and the watch is a statement on your wrist. Overall I decided to give it a miss which was a shame as the Sky D is a great timepiece.

My AD has a full length mirror in store, they get you to stand side on so that you can see how the watch looks when your arm is by your side or when your hand is in a trouser pocket. Gives a good perspective and better then just bending your wrist and looking down at the watch or taking a wrist selfie.
