Submariner Insert. What to do?

When I sent my 1972 Submariner for its first service in over 40 years, the shop replaced the bezel insert with an incorrect version, and kept the original. The original was very faded (think pale blueberry), and had a much wider font than what I got back.

I miss the old insert. Any thoughts on getting my old one back? I've tried contacting the shop in Florida with no response.

If you've given them a reasonable opportunity to respond through standard channels, it's time to start contacting them on social media -- first privately, then not privately, then very not privately.

I doubt it will come to that, though. Without knowing what kind of "shop" it is, I can't say, but I suspect this is more likely an accident than something malicious, and they just need a nudge. A smaller shop especially might not have great communication channels given the pandemic (and Florida at the epicenter).

A fat font ghost bezel insert is $2k+ in value, I would file a complaint.

It's standard procedure for Rolex to do that unless you specify that it's not to be touched.
It's also a prime example of why people are more selective as to who services their vintage watches and opt to go with a great independent watchmaker

Think of it this way.
You've had 40 years of trouble free usage with no service.
That's a good run by any standard.
Rolex likely thought they were doing you a big favour
Incorrect is a subjective term. As it is a genuine Rolex part, as far as Rolex is concerned it is absolutely correct.

It won't happen.
It was changed on an exchange basis and is probably taken out with the rest of the garbage days ago.

How come RSC's appear not to be aware or care that such features/characteristics make the watch (extra) special? Shouldn't they be aware of what they have in hands and that altering/updating same could have serious consequences?

If I would bring Rembrandt's "Night Watch" to a RSC for restoration, would they repaint their 17th-century armour into full 2020 riot gear?

"We cleaned and updated your Night Watch, you're welcome".

They basically stole it and knew they can make money off it. Basically took advantage of you. You have pics of your old watch to prove what it looks like? If yes I would threaten them to return it or you would turn to social media and ruin their reputation

OP talks about a shop and not a Rolex SC. By shop can you clarify what you mean?

If it is a non Rolex governed service centre then they have absolutely no rights to be keeping any used parts. You’re well within your rights to ask for the original back. Time is of the essence though. You’re going to need to work fast to not lose out!

Doubt it. Watchmaker already sold it, or it’s on eBay now. Who was the watchmaker?

Was this an RSC? That's the worst place to send a vintage piece.
