Rolex Day Date 40 or Day Date 2 in Platinum or WG
Hi all. So, a Rolex Day Date with a Blue Dial has been something I've been wanting for almost a decade and told myself only when I achieved a specific career goal. So, it's looking like I'm going to hit that goal in the next month or two. And as a result, it's time to start thinking about which Day Date!
To be honest, I love the size and mechanism of the new Day Date 40 (DD40). However, I don't love the dials. I appreciate the dials more of the Day Date 2 (DD2). As a result, I'm having a hard time deciding, especially because it's hard to find a great DD2 to try on, in person right now. So, here are my options, and I would appreciate perspectives/insights from all! Option 1. DD40 White Gold with blue deconstructed roman numeral dial. Pros: Weight, lower cost than Option 2 and on par with option 3, most modern movement, improved clasp, ceramic pins to prevent bracelet stretch. Cons: I like the dial, but it makes it lean more dressy than sporty like an arabic dial, so I don't love the dial. I like the fluted bezel, but love the dome bezel on the platinum more. Option 2. DD2 Platinum with blue arabic dial. Pros: Beautiful and rare dial, flat bezel and larger size gives it a more utility look to dress up or down, and harder to find (potential to be a really rare, less made rolex long term), ceramic pins to avoid bracelet stretch. Cons: Probably heavy; highest costs; larger size with solid end links makes it wear much larger than the DD40, so hard to determine if it will feel/fit as nicely as the DD40, on my 7" flatter risk. Option 3. DD2 White Gold with dark blue arabic dial. Great compromise of option 1 and 2. Pro: Beautiful and unique dial, more utility sportier appearance, lowest cost option used. Con: Size/fit for same reasons as option 2; no ceramic pins, so bracelet stretch is inevitable over time. Thoughts? Overall, I would wear this watch pretty offten and it would complement my Batman on jubilee, Milguass Blue Z, and a few others... |

Overall, I like option 1; however, that dial on option 2, the DD2, is quite distinctive.

It’s such a personal decision. I would NOT spend any amount of money on any watch that I did not absolutely love. Especially if it’s a DD.
I went with the DD40 with sticks because I appreciate the practicality of lume. It dresses up and down quite nicely. I loved the WG blue dial combo, but never really liked the deconstructed Roman indices. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Either of the DDII options for me. Love the smooth bezel and the arabic numerals on the version you posted!

There's no comparison with the PT DD2. I too prefer the DD2 over the DD40 due to dial choices, but I also like the more sporty appearance of the DD2 as well. The only exception to this for me is the RG DD40 with Olive dial. I had the blue wave for a very short time. It is a phenomenal piece. However, the opportunity for the PT DD2 arose and I did not hesitate to relinquish it. My vote in order would be:
1. PT DD2 with Ice blue 2. WG DD2 with blue wave 3. What was the third choice again? |

Platinum for sure is my favorite, but the blue is a close second.

When comes to DD, dial is everything. Personally I love the PT DDII .. I find the fluted bezel on the DDII overwhelming.. the smooth bezel on the DDII is perfection even better than the PT DD40!

I have 7.5 inch wrist. My wrist is a bit round, so the case rides a little high next to the wrist knuckle, but that's similar to me wearing a 40mm.

As beautiful as the platinum DD is, the smooth bezel is a deal breaker for me...........just looks like something is missing. Go for the WG DD with Roman numerals. That wavy dial takes all the elegance out of the watch and it becomes just another sport watch, although an expensive one and a beauty as well.
At the end of the day, you truly can't go wrong........purchase the one that sings to you....that's all that matters!!!! |

Both great. But between the two, DD40.
Good luck and congratulations on the career milestone. |

Option 1 is probably the best white metal DD out there. Totally love it. One of my grail watches for sure.

Rolex Day Date 40 or Day Date 2 in Platinum or WG
So, I hung out with my AD for a bit today. He didn't have any of my preferred options. But, we tried on similar sizes to compare. Unfortunately, he had no DD2s and couldn't track any down. We tried a few DD40s and DD36s, in platinum and gold. Ultimately, I do love the size and fit of the DD40. I also got surprised per the pictures below with a beautiful Daytona White Gold on an Oyster Flex. The fit, feel and dial are amazing. A little less elegant, but very fun and can be dressed up and down. So, now I'm torn between the Daytona below and ordering/waiting for a DD40 blue dial. Thoughts or other considerations? I'm torn again!
