Old 14ct gold Rolex.
Hello all.
Firstly I would like to say Happy Christmas to all! I currently own 3 Rolex’s. 2 of them were passed down by my family and my GMT master 2 was brought last year. 242CC9F4-0659-4FBA-9B83-D3274E8DE94B.jpeg F6A3DD49-3382-42DF-9055-F02BB392DF26.jpeg E336ADBF-8D54-475C-8794-7AB4CD0572FC.jpeg 39C6B9CB-44D7-41E2-84B9-CE7ACD8BBEE0.jpeg The 14 Kt gold one was brought by my dad around 15 years ago from a place in Canterbury, U.K. I have hardly worn it but it has always interested me. We don’t know much about it. I would like to apologise for the pictures, I have asked a family member to send me some as I am currently in the USA and the watch is in the U.K. Maybe somone on here can tell me a bit more? Thanks in advance. Ps: I hope I’ve inserted the pictures ok. |

Looks like a Morellis finish 1007? Have you had the bracelet off to check the model number? The case looks larger than 34mm, but it has the lug holes that makes me think it's not a 1013.

I’m currently in the Us and the watch is in the U.K. we can’t take it anywhere to confirm due to new covid lockdown that has closed all local places. He put a value of around 10k usd on it but I really don’t know what to belive. The same man tired to buy our ss sub 5513 for 4K before admitting it’s worth around 15k usd. This was a watch that was handed down and it’s always took my interest as I have never seen another one like it. |

The gold prices have been wild. Some collectors find this finish irresistible, others find it abhorrent. Rare doesn't always mean valuable --I have a NOS Jaeger LeCoultre 2-register chronograph in a rare case from 1946, should be worth $9K USD, IF ANYONE WANTED IT. The biggest issue here will be case size, the diameter of the case without the winding crown. The larger gold case time-only, like the 1013, should be solidly in that 9-14k range, but just 2mm difference, the 34mm case, will not be as valuable, more like 7-10k, depending on whether anyone is crazy for that finish. This Forum discourages valuation discussions, so I'm only speaking in the most general of generalities, lest anyone be offended. Forum-wise, it's a good policy, otherwise all day long it would just be folks asking for quotes, instead of doing the necessary research, but I can imagine finding comparables to this watch might be challenging.

Be sure to post when you take the bracelet off to find the model number, this could also be a 6564, I've seen many of those in 14kt, but none with this finish.

Here's a dumb photo I took of three gold watches. The bubbleback is 18k, the 6564 is 14k and 34mm, the 1013 is 18k and 36mm.

I wish I still had the original dial and hands on my 1013. The markers and hands on yours have so much more character than the sticks on either of mine. My 1012 is similar to this one, I wish I had the bracelet for THAT watch but how often do rose gold jubilees of the right vintage come up for sale?
Lovely set! |

Pete, the 20mm jubilee is stretched and wonky but it wears like a dream. I'll find a better one, someday. Maybe you'll see one in RG, you never know. It's funny, but the jubilees in 14k hold up A LOT better, and we could debate why for hours (lighter watch, stronger alloy, less wrist-time, etc.)

Don’t put a rolled gold band on a gold head
It will wear the lugs very Quickly |

Thought I would bring an old thread back.
We have been looking for some info on the 14kt gold one. I am currently in the USA and my 5513 sub, and this gold one is back in the U.K. We used Chrono24 and did the watch scan it it says model number 1005. Has anyone seen a 1005 with this finish on before? We would go to a shop and get it checked out, but The U.K. is back on a lock down |

I have not personally seen a 1005 with a factory Morellis finish before, but there are so many, many references that I'm not even AWARE of, until someone posts an example. Not sure what your concerns are, this seems legitimate. I have seen 1005s in 14k.

Just a quick update:
Sorry for the delay. It’s been a crazy few months. I have just spoken to family back in the U.K. and we have got the jewellery shops notes on it. The states it’s a 1005 from 1966 in full original condition |

Now I wonder what RSC would say if you presented that 1005 to them asking for a full service, haha. Anyway nice watch OP and thanks for the update.

If it is not an original finish then then they will want to polish it to its originality. If they think there isnt enough material for a polish then they will either refuse the service or recommend a new bracelet and or a new mid case. Rolex wants their watches to be factory correct and looking brand new, even if this means all new service parts. They dont care about vintage collectability.

Not the best picture, I do apologise. Had a service by a local jewellery shop in the U.K. and runs perfectly!
