SS Sub Question

Sorry in advance but I have a sub date vs no-date question. Couldn’t find the answer to this online...hoping you guys may have some insight.

Already own a Bluesy but have an itch to pick up a black SS sub and am trying to determine if I want another date version or no-date version. I do find the date feature useful on all of my watches.

That said, this question is purely a long term investment or value question. Which version of a black SS sub will likely retain or grow in value more over time? The no-date is the original and vintage no dates go for huge dollars. Hard to say the same about the no-date since they’re “less old”.

It’s not that I plan to sell in the future...heck I don’t know what I’ll do with my watch collection decades from now, but it was jus another part of the decision I wanted to think about and consider. Any feedback is appreciated.

No date sub. The cyclops keeps you from wiping the glass clean before getting the perfect insta shot.

Buy a never polished hardly worn 5512 no date from the original owner with box and papers and military provenance. And you’re set.

Buy what you’d like to wear, regardless of what strangers on the interwebs might have to say.

Yep, it's all about the $$$... all of the time.

If you want an investment, buy stocks or Bitcoin... not a watch.

I really need to invest in a Crystal Ball with all of these questions.

There are a few reasons you are getting these responses.

1) Many members of TRF don't see any "investment" aspect in Rolex at all. It is a hobby and if the watches were worthless after purchase, it wouldn't matter.

2) Many members here ARE professional or experienced amateur investors and the dollar amounts associated with Rolex "investment" and the amount they "may" appreciate are essentially insignificant. Even if that Sub 2x in 10yrs...so what? That makes the topic boring...

3) Rolex is seen here as timing tool for exploration, adventure, accomplishment and toughness. The lore of the tool watch is a much more accepted ideation than any dollar amounts attached to them.

You and a million other people are buying submariners. Date or no date won’t matter. You’re not going to hit vintage sub lottery in the future with any modern submariner. That ship has sailed.

It’s a shame OP is still asking these questions even owning so many pieces in his signature

I think OP is getting a bit of a hard time here by some. Yes, there is plenty of information online but why not ask here? Plenty of genuine experience to draw on and if you’re bored of the question why not simply move on?

In the eyes of many, OP’s mistake is of course to try to take into account any financial gain they may make in the future. My intention is to eventually pass my watches on to my children and they represent a small % of my assets so future value is not something I consider. We simply don’t know OP’s situation and / or attitude.

For what it’s worth there is a financial advisor where I live that grew very rich from helping people claim back any PPI they may have been wrongly sold. Despite his considerable wealth he held out to buy a Daytona a good few years ago. He did this in the belief that, out of all the watches he liked, this one had a good chance of increasing in value. This despite the fact that any gain in the value of the Daytona will be a drop in the ocean in comparison to his total wealth. To him, the purchase of the Daytona represented best value.

Each to their own I say.

It’s a submariner or a submariner date. There isn’t a no-date sub.

For the 11 and 12 series there will be no difference, not for 25 years anyway - or never.

Personally I bought both the LV date ceramic and the submariner... because I LIKE them.
