Salesman's samples at ADs???

So I have the blessing and curse of living quite literally next door to a Watches of Switzerland and I tend to drop in a lot. I walked past yesterday and to my surprise the windows were full of Wimbledons and Bluesies a two-tone Daytona that I quite liked, stuff you NEVER see at that WoS, but with a label saying "For Exhibition Only." So I asked the sales rep and he said they were trying out stocking the shelves with samples that people could try on, but he was elusive as to whether or not they were working models.

I'm a lifelong fan of the brand, but not as knowledgeable as I'm certain a lot of you guys are, have any of you heard of that? I would think it would open a Pandora's Box on Rolex's part to introduce any sort of factory-made, non-working copies into the world, but a whole staff of employees can't come to work every day to attend to 3 Lady Datejusts I suppose.

At Patek’s flagship store in Geneva a couple years ago, this was the case, non working examples, or so they said. I was able to look at the 5711 and 5712, Close as I will ever get at an AD.

Well Rolex does built them and they are tipically use on events held at various AD’s where people can try them on. Tipically have the 10:10 time preset. Think AD’s should indeed get them so people can at least look / try them and get a feeling if like them or not

Better than empty cases, which look like either Rolex or the AD are going out of business.

But typically they don't leave them with the AD, do they? And, if that were the case, wouldn't they have the most popular models out, rather than the 2nd and 3rd tier moderately popular models?

My guess is that these are the ones that they know will go to high-value customers, but haven't actually been reserved yet.

That is very interesting...I bet there are folks that still try to haggle the dealers for non working watches because no one on instagram will know they have no guts on the inside...they can still post the watch to look cool.

That would be a MASSIVE no-no. You're basically asking dealers to sell people real cases to put fake movements in. Now, perhaps the ADs could set up a back room with all of the necessary backgrounds and, for $50-100 you could go there, snap photos and then leave .

Sort of like people were doing with a bunch of grounded private jets in Russia.

In this world I don't doubt it. I am old enough to remember people buying fake car phones when the real ones went for over $1000.

Ok, so check out the thread on Rolex supposedly limiting deliveries to customers until the 19th. If true, makes sense here: can’t swell for another ten days so might as well show…

They still do. Calibers with one element (balance wheel maybe) removed.

There’s one big difference between Patek and Rolex here: the former uses display backs.

Rolex fakes for AD use a platinum weight to replicate the original weight, and are devoid of caliber altogether.

That was my point. With PP seeing the movement is part of seeing the watch. With Rolex, there’s no need. Hence why PP would bother using the non-working movements.

OP, as already stated, if the watches show 10:10 and have 28 as the date, they are dummy models as used for trunk shows. If they are randomly stopped or running then WOS is indeed trying a new sales approach. RolexUSA did not give them extra real watches just for show.

Hello! yes all we have available to sell are a few 28mm and 31mm…This week Rolex did send an assortment of sports models for display purposes. So our cases look full, but not for purchase

I checked in with my AD earlier today & this was her response.

I also asked whether they were “dummies”..
They actually have a movement in them, it’s just currently stopped. That way it gives an accurate weight as well

I was at an AD in Shanghai in 2018. They had several "hot" watches on display. Our communication wasn't the best given I don't speak Mandarin and the sales rep didn't speak English but I walked away thinking they were real or at least good props to demonstrate features.
I played with a Sky Dweller and I was able to manipulate the Ring Command bezel to set time, date, calendar and secondary timezone. On the other hand, I'm somewhat doubtful Rolex would use "real" watches for a trunk show where one might walk away. In reality how many people do more than throw it on their wrist to see how it looks, wears and snap the pic they'll post on Instagram

Looks like Rolex is stocking models at some of the larger ADs with the sports models. Popped into an AD today and couldn’t believe my eyes, watches in the cases, including sports models: BLRO, BLNR, Subs and Daytona’s. All for exhibition only, watches all had movements.

Yes, Rolex did supply them with real watches. Didn’t believe it until I tried one on. All are stocked with the movement.

This was also the case in a lot of the ADs that I visited in Seoul when I was there a few times in 2019. Lots of watches for trying on, but they weren’t for sale.

So when you offer to buy on the spot, I wonder what their response would be?

I imagine they’d get pretty creative.

In Shanghai they told me "Display only, not for sale". I took that to mean, they weren't for sale to me

They wouldn’t need to if people didn’t get so butt hurt at being told the AD prefers to sell them to their other preferred customers.
