Special orders

What has your guys' experience been on "special orders"? E.G. putting money down and then having a watch delivered within some time frame. My AD offered to special order a TT DJ41 I expressed some interest in. Is this a common thing to special order? I assume ladies DJ can be special ordered a little bit more easily but will special orders be taken on men's watches or sports watches ever?

I assume a random window shopper with no spend history can't just walk into a Rolex store and special order a TT DJ41, otherwise the Grey market prices would not be above MSRP.

Anyone can order a DJ two tone. They do reserve the DD40 orders for special customs at the ADs I know.

DJ orders should be quick (6-8 weeks). DD orders is basically unknown but currently my AD is estimate 1-1.5 years for the DD40 (and NO green dial)

Friend ordered a 36mm silver dial flutted / jubilee band at his AD, for him was a very straight forward process

Is it so much of a “special order” or when the next watch comes in that you want to buy?..My buddy walked into a AD last weekend for the first time and “ordered” TT SD. Paid in full. Watch is expected to be delivered in 2-4 months… assuming that’s the estimated time frame for the AD to receive their next TT SD… nothing “special” about it.. IMO

Two offered to order an OP34 for me. One asked for 50% down (no history) and the other didn’t (bought Explorer there in May). Went with second floor multiple reasons. No estimate on timing though, but with no money down or rush to receive I don’t really care.

Okay so if anybody can just request any TT DJ (including 36 and 41) with a relatively short time frame, why would the Grey prices be above MSRP?

1. Not everyone knows to ask.
2. "relatively short time frame" is subjective.
3. Just because AD can order doesn't mean they'll offer to do so for every customer.
4. Do we actually know what people are paying (vs. attempting to charge) on the secondary market for these? Secondary market dealers may price above MSRP because they want to give the impression that all Rolex are in demand (or just get the one or two suckers willing to pay without negotiating).

Yes but the reason that secondary sellers aren’t jumping to do this is that 2 tone pieces just don’t have the same resale value in the DJ market. And a dealer isn’t gonna put down the deposit and wait around just to get a piece that they might not even be able to sell down the road. Secondary sellers make their money because they can compete with the AD on inventory. If anyone can order these pieces, the secondary sellers advantage goes away and it doesn’t make sense for them to invest their capital for a small or minimal potential return.
