What would you choose to wear with very excitable children?

I have a modest watch collection of a hulk, black sub, date just, day date, harrods Tudor, a couple of omegas and a breitling which I enjoy wearing during the weekdays. However I have 3 children who can be quite boisterous and we are all quite active at the weekends. This means a lot of the time I don’t tend to wear these watches as I really don’t want deep scratches in them. I’m okay with light ones from general use. I was thinking of getting another watch for times like these such as a breitling endurance where it looks good but it a bit tougher. I hate not wearing a watch and can really get on with smart watches.
Any recommendations?

Anything brushed with a ceramic bezel is perfect for dogs and children :)

Seamaster or Black Bay if you want a good quality beater. Seiko if you want something cheap. G shock if you want something which won't break and you can throw away if it gets damaged.

Personally, I'd just wear something you have already...you'll get the watch refinished at service time.

Otherwise Explorers hold up well.

Have a look at Victorinox inox. Nice watch on a rubber strap can take a good beating. Otherwise just wear the watches you have.

I think the watches you have will hold up just fine. Of course, if you need to blame a new one on the kids, go for it!

I would wear my G-Shock GST-S110. I bought a Sekonda once from an Argos. It held up pretty well.

I remember my uncle had a Day-Date that he would wear regularly. It was bold and I really was impressed by it. I associated that watch with him. His watch collection sparked my interest in watches at a young age.

So pull that Day-Date out and impress those kids! Never know, but you might create a future watch collector within the group.

The day date is from my dad so pretty special. He loved watches and always used to turn up with a new one when transiting through Dubai in the 90s. It’s one of the reasons for the growing collection as I can’t split that watch between 3 kids.
Bit off topic but my most prized watch is a tissot seastar t12 which was the first watch he bought in the uk in 1968. It cost many multiples of its actual worst to restore it to all its glory!

They are watches and meant to be worn. If your kids are so out of control that they will scratch them to a level you don't feel comfortable with you have a kid problem and not a watch problem.

Wear the watches as they are meant to be worn. Honestly the only time I won't wear something nice is if we are doing yard work or hiking. That is when the G-Shock comes out.

Children are always excitable and can’t be expected to sit in a corner. There are always going to be bumps and clashes when playing some kind of sport with them. It’s these times that I want to avoid chunks being taken out of watches. Hence having something that can be a little bit more robust and a little less gut wrenching if takes a pounding

So, you are looking for a specific watch to wear when you play with your children?

How long does said activity last and what is entailed? Wrestling? Judo? Full-contact tiddly winks? How old are these rowdy children? How old are you? Is this a real question?

Nothing bizarre about it at all. The children are just playing how they should be but accidents do happen. It’s quite easy to knock your watch on the climbing frame etc.
Yep I understand that watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed but on the other hand I don’t want to be careless with them.

I do take them off when working on cars, because I don’t want anything that conducts electricity on my wrist.

I would consider using your Sub for this purpose - ceramic bezel, fully brushed, and can take a few knocks easily. I always thought a really pristine steel Sub looks kinda strange anyway….underutilized and underappreciated almost.

If not, when I know the watch will take a bit of banging around that makes me leery, I generally turn to a Sinn or a Tudor BB58 picked up last year. Get a Sinn tegimented version and you’ll be fine.

Well after wearing my 16600 SD as a real working tool that was well used and often abused with well over 600 hours underwater. I would say that all Rolex watches will be perfectly safe around any number of boisterous children. And if and a big if they do get scratched easily remedied at normal routine service where those very nice people at the RSC will polish and return watch as good as new.

Tougher than a black sub? I dont think so. just pick one of the watches and make it your daily wearer and dont mind the scratches. I cannot recall any 'deep' scratches i got, but you will scratches. After 20 years in construction, I have only broken one lens on my sub- and its still worth more than I paid for it (and all the RSC bills) in 2001. All the scratches are taken out by RSC every 7 years or so.
Honestly I proudly wear my watch in almost all rough service situations. Heck, that's why I bought a watch that expensive in the first place.

PS : I think your collection is far from modest!

Just wear them. They can take anything you throw at them. I have 3 kids as well and don’t hesitate to wear any of them.

I chuckled after reading this. My kids; 4,7,9, and 10 watched one season of that show and now we have a ropes course in the back yard. Scratching my watches is the least of my worries.
