Is it possible 4 a Sub w a serial range of 1979 2 have white gold surrounds on dial?

First off, sorry for the '4' and '2' as opposed to 'for' and 'to' in the title, I ran out of room for my question, which stems from a nice sub I saw the other day and passed on but have been thinking about since...

The serial of this submariner puts it at 1979 from the serial number look ups. I was near certain white gold surrounds did not appear to around 1981ish, has anyone seen a 1979 sub with the original dial containing the white gold surrounds? It's a nice watch, but worried about a service dial.

Sorry, no pics right now.

Well, pictures would certainly help but a 1979 serial/4 digit reference with white gold surrounds I believe would almost certainly be a service dial.

White gold surrounds did not make their way to dials until the 80s.

Service dial unless you are looking at an incorrect serial number date chart. .

Probably a 16800 with a WG surround dial. The 16800 came out around 1979, the WG was available late in the production but it could be fitted on the earlier ones...

1680 did not come with WG surround, not even a service dial.

I’ll try and get pics tomorrow if I can.
Near certain a 16800 (it’s not a 1680, I wouldn’t have bothered this forum if it was because that would be an obvious service dial)and that’s what has had me thinking about it…
I’ll update the thread hopefully tomorrow and much appreciated on the insights.

Can you be more specific as to what type of 4 digit sub?

a 5513 submariner definitely produced and came with WG dials - it was introduced later and service dials also came in WG dials.

I have yet to see a 1680 with WG dial. The 5 digits definitely.
