What is a watch that surprised you? for better or worse
The yachtmaster was never on my radar until I actually saw it in person the colors really work well together the rose gold, the matte finish on the bezel, the dial seems to be between black and slate what's a watch that surprised you, for better or worse?

The Modern 6 digit Sea Dweller models...
Had all three and sold all three...Didn't like them... Went back to the 16600... Can't beat it... IMG_0009.JPG |

Kinda pains me to say it, but the ceramic steel Daytona. A watch I never honestly saw the hype about and I just dismissed it. However I tried one on at a grey dealer and I was actually quite taken aback by it. A lovely lovely watch which felt like perfection on my wrist. Sadly, availability and pricing means I will likely never own one - but that’s ok.

For me it was the 16610LV. I'd been admiring them in windows/displays for years and promised myself that if I ever hit a defined goal I would reward myself with this watch.
When the day came to give myself permission to buy it, I was disappointed by the flimsiness of the bracelet, the clasp and the really awful fold out diving extension. Tag were making better bracelets and Omega were on another planet. Even when it was available to buy at MSRP, I didn't think it was worth the asking price. The 116610LV addressed every issue. When I first saw a photo of the dial I had to look away. But when I saw one for real it instantly became my grail watch. Joint grail to be exact. First time I saw a Sky Dweller I thought it looked wrong. But it grew on me. Then I found about about the movement, complications, how the dial information was presented and the user friendliness. As I began to gain more knowledge of Rolex design and its history, I started to admire how they has managed to come up with a Classic/Professional hybrid design. |

This … bought as a rotation piece really, because I couldn’t get at sub at retail actually, I thought this was a better deal on the secondary market. Almost exactly a year later I don’t really wear much else still, It’s perfect. And that’s coming from someone who prefers gold shiny watches in general :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Tudor BB58,
Never considered adding a Tudor, but was very comfortable and the dial had me doing double takes. Love it (especially on a Rubber B band) |

Tudor watches. Was excited to check them out and was very disappointed in how cheesy they look. Ever single model looks like a wannabe Rolex. Some Tudor models look like a mixture of several different Rolex models wrapped into one. I understand there’s a connection between the two brands but Tudors look like something out of Macys.

OF Daytona's, few years back I couldn't fathom getting PM with a rubber strap. But since nobody needed to go back to offices and perhaps rarely dress up ever again, the rubbers are are awesome way to wear and tone down the Daytona's.
Also was never a fan of Royal Oaks until I saw them in person and the way they reflect light. Nautilus by comparison, underwhelmed me in person given their market price. |

I’d say my 326935. Everything I had hoped for and more. Already had a 326934 in black so I was just expecting a heavier clone but the heft, color, and Chocolate dial blew me away and still does.
Been wearing my Rootbeer for about a week and miss it so as a matter of fact I’m gonna wind her up right now.

I agree. The black dial in person is very elegant, more so than the white dial. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hi there Rolex lovers,
I have been into watches for sometime now & tbh I never thought I’d ever be able to afford one in my life now I’m here learning as much as I can before I venture into the private seller watch world. If anyone has any good advice for me it would be much appreciated |

Biggest surprise for me though is how much I like the Rolex Wimbledon dial. From photos, I was never drawn to it. Saw it in person on a 36MM Datejust and bought it on the spot. Love it. |

Great thread. For me, SD4K 116600. Fits like a glove, traded my fatboi sub for it and haven’t looked back.

Explorer 39. Thought at one point (7-8 years ago) it would be my next one. Tried it on and just couldn’t get myself to like the proportions, and I was into bigger watches at the time.

I wanted a YM40 blue sunburst dial from the day it was released. When I finally got one I wore it for a couple of months and felt no connection to it. That’s the only time that has happened to me with any of my Rolexes, ended up giving it to my brother. He loves it and wears it everyday so win win I guess.

The original Tudor BB58. When it was released I really didn’t like the look of it from the images on Tudor’s website. I especially didn’t like the look of the faux rivets.
Tried it on at an AD at their suggestion after they explained waiting time for an Explorer 39mm. It crossed my mind to decline the offer but thought there was no harm in trying it on. I immediately loved it and knew there and then I had to buy it. |

I got the Exp II as a ‘low profile’ travel watch when i bought the WG Daytona. My AD asked what else i was interested in and i thought of the exp II so he threw that in, but it has become one of my favourite frequent rotation watches.
And the BLRO, i got it from my AD when my blue SkyD had to be sent in to RSC for taking in water. Turns out i wear the BLRO more than any other watch, the jubilee bracelet is just real comfortable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I was actually surprised at the watches that didn't "wow" me. Over the years, I've tried on the Smurf, Batman, SkyDweller Rose Gold with slate dial, Yachtmaster WG 42.
I think I'm more a fan of the older pre-ceramic stuff in general. |

One of my grails was an aquanaut. I tried it on and it felt far too delicate. I also want to love the daytona but find the profile too small. That said, not sure if it's an age thing but my tastes have definitely changed and I am leaning toward smaller watches. I tried on an OP41 and an OP36 and felt the 36 was more elegant. My daily is an SD43 so this caught me off guard.

OP41 yellow. It looks kind of cool on some wrist shots, different, unconventional. Tried it on at the AD, it worked well with my white shirt and blue blazer. Took it home. After a few weeks, I never seemed to want to wear it. So, to my surprise it had to go.

Two watches that were way better than I assumed are the 126603 and the Bell & Ross 01-93 GMT
I have a 7 3/4 wrist so I'm not a fan of little, tiny, girly watches. I want some bulk. Both have a nice size without being too top heavy or overly thick. Both also have a nice wrist presence. The SeaDweller is the first two-tone I've ever owned. It is an incredible piece. The contrasting colors are beautiful and the gleam on a sunny day is an attention grabber without being overly cheesy. |
