Surprise offering while shopping…. turned it down

Was at an AD buying a different brand of watch, and was told by the friendly salesperson that the previously empty Rolex area did have a piece available after all - after I committed to purchasing a different timepiece and casually asked if there were any SS models available. Rolex Explorer II Polar 226570

Tried it on and straight away thought it didn’t suit me at all, and turned it down

Some of my friends told me I could’ve bought it, held onto it, and flipped it a few months later as it’s a hot piece

Did I make a mistake turning this down?

What's your own answer to this?
- do you miss the chance to flip to turn it to profit in short term then Yes
- if you already in the list for another sport model and want to ensure better chance with your AD then No
- U dislike as this model does not fit you then also No

Your friends are right in that you could have made some quick and easy money by flipping it. They are wrong in that there would have been any reason to keep it your safe for a few months.

Trusted Sellers are selling this watch for over $16k right now.

It depends on what your intention is.

If you are looking at an interesting piece to own and this doesn't fit your criteria, then yes, it is fine to turn it down as it isn't something you like or want, and kudos to you for giving others a chance who like it to own it.

On the other hand if you are looking at it from a "flippable" or an investment standpoint, then yes, you made the wrong decision for turning down a steels sports model Rolex (a polar as well), as the only way it is going in value is up.

Hopefully it ends up on the wrist of someone who truly wants to wear and enjoy that ExpII.

No, you did the right thing, if you didn't like the watch then why buy it and deny someone who wants it from buying it.

I backed out of getting the latest Snoopy Speedy, I received a nice e-mail from the Manager at the store to say thank you for not buying it to flip it and giving someone else the chance to own the watch.

If you didn't want it you have done the right thing. It has hopefully gone to a home who will appreciate it.

You obviously were not on the look out for a quick flip and a profit. Had you been, you would have bought the Polar. This behaviour is frowned on by some and might jeopardise your future prospects with the AD. This is not certain, and technically, if you buy a watch it's yours to do with as you please. It's a judgement call.

I have turned it down more than 10 times in the past 2 years for some of Rolexes that I didn't love it as much (I love all Rolexes but some more than the others).

You did the right thing.

You did the right thing, especially if you knew the watch wasn’t for. I’ve also turned down many watches that I’ve been offered. Better to maintain AD relationship and personal integrity than make a quick buck IMO

As others have stated, You definitely did the right thing. I would never buy a watch that I did not intend to wear.

The only thing you probably regret is posting this story. Now that your inbox is full of DMs from people that want this watch asking where this was :-).

You did the right thing.

Someone looking for a watch like that from an authorized dealer (LIKE MYSELF!!!) deserves that watch. I wish I could buy it myself, but it is probably sold already by now.

You did the right thing. Turning that down so someone who really wants l it to wear but it will also get you your SS Rolex you really want sooner. AD knows you’re not a flipper now

There's no mistake, it all depends on whether you need the money or not for whatever reason.

If not, then you did the right thing. If you do need money, then yeah you should definitely have bought it and flipped it later.

It’s good that your instinct was to reject the current “layman as watchbroker” anomaly. Far too many people fancy themselves as pseudo watchbrokers these days. I’m not saying it’s unacceptable, but logic says that one cannot wander around in life seizing every opportunity to make a quick buck, primarily because if you do you’d be unfocused and dabbling in all sorts of things that you’re wholly unqualified to participate in.

Stick to what you’re good at, trained to do or qualified to do.

My 2 cents.

(Oh and welcome to the forum )

Good for you
I have a friend that was on the list for a sub date and he was offered a LV and he said no thank you. The SA was appreciative and rewarded him with his sub and then a few weeks later with a BLRO.

To be a bit contrary here, the next guy who gets offered the watch is just as likely (and maybe more likely) to flip it than “enjoy” it.
And buying it increases your purchase history with the AD making it more likely to get what you want in future.
And if you feel bad about selling it for profit, there is nothing stopping you from selling it to someone at your cost.

That being said, I would have bought the watch because I would have worn it, and I can appreciate and respect turning it down.
