116500 owners

I have read here a few guys feeling uncomfortable wearing their 116500 because of the asking prices, on the secondary market, are through the roof. What asking price would make you want to sell? I have a black dial and times would have to get very hard for me to sell. Other things would go before the Daytona.

If you do love that particular watch, no matter how high the price has gone up, you should not sell it.

The day I decide to sell my Daytona is the day I give up completely on watch collecting and move onto something else. So every single watch goes and none gets kept.

Regarding feeling uncomfortable wearing it in public, yes it does affect where I wear it to nowadays. Previously when I first bought it I could wear it to hawker centres for breakfast or to take away supper in the middle of the night. Now it’s just mostly worn to certain places.

I’m an owner of a Daytona c black and wear it. I don’t plan on selling ever…

However I someone offered me 1M cash for it… you’d be an idiot to say no.

With the way things are today, I also pick and choose where I wear my watches. I feel like the Daytona does not draw as much attention as a DD,SUB or GMT

It doesn’t matter what the value is, I already own it. The Daytona will never get high enough for me to personally feel uncomfortable to wear one.

Where the Daytona fits into your collection might depend on how you wear it as opposed to how much it is worth.

I’m sure there’s a price eventually where I’d part with one, but right now I enjoy the watches more than the money.

Meh… the street value doesn’t make me want to sell, and I have several Daytonas. If the value of the watch exceeds your comfort level, or you feel it’s too much of a risk to wear it, put it away in safe keeping or sell it. I prefer safe keeping.

I had a black one and traded it to white from my AD. I walk in with black and walk out with white + $6K cash in the pocket. Both purchased from same AD with MSRP. I should of keep black, no regrets though.

The GM value of my Daytona is on the back of my mind. Sometimes I can't comprehend $50K watch on my wrist.

I put my Daytona on an Everest rubber band and it’s a different watch. Sometimes I wish I yearn for the oyster bracelet but in all honesty. The rubber b makes it a different watch. It almost always go unnoticed and there is a stealth factor to it.

I would think at some price you have to start worrying about where you wear the watch and what activities you are participating in. Just my two cents

Thanks pain888. Agreed. I have an old pic of my one kid timing herself reading in kindergarten using a white 116500ln to get to 10 min. That is priceless to me.

How do you know? I've never understood the "leave them for my child" justification with watches.

I'll leave mine to my wife and son but before I'm gone I will teach them how to liquidate them properly as I don't ever assume that they will like something just because I did.

That is a very good point. I hope they will. They already know about watches, movements, and help build the collection. Being optimistic is guess . Thanks for your perspective and challenge—it does help

I too have a 116500 Black dial and it will be the last thing I part with in order to not go hungry. I wanted one for too long, and getting it for list price from an AD at the start of the pandemic with no purchase history was just about the best stroke of luck I've ever had.

That being said, the insane prices on the secondary market along with a general rise in lawlessness have given me pause regarding where I wear it. In general I strongly value my anonymity. I drive common and old cars because I like to blend. I wear bland and unstylish clothing because I like to be comfortable and don't care what other people think. The only thing flashy about me is the Rolex and people DO notice it from time to time and say something.

I live in a nice, safe place so I still wear it around my home town plenty, but I had always dreamed of going back to Vegas and visiting watch shops and being treated like someone more special than I'm used to because of it. I wouldn't wear it to Vegas today.

Why sell it if you don't need the money? Enjoy it. It's only going to go up in value and if you sell it you'll regret it. Wear it and forget about everything else. It's just a watch....it's not worth as much as any of my fingers or toes to me.

That's because you could pick up another one tomorrow on Chrono24 for 45K. But....if the price there was 2 million you'd be an idiot to say yes. It's all relative. I don't worry about what it's worth...I just wear it and enjoy it. If I ever need money (god forbid) it's a gold brick.

Never sell a Daytona . Personal experience ,15 years ago .
I did make up for those costly mistakes,but it took some time and effort .

I felt uncomfortable wearing my nautilus when it was AU$120K because it was recognizable. the daytona is now the same - monetary value is irrelevant. You can feel comfortable wearing a $250K ALS minute repeater / tourbillon because no one has any idea what it is so you'll never be mugged.

Nah say all other prices are relatively the same as now (ie the price of a house is the same as now), but the daytona was 2m on chrono24... the daytona's getting sold...

now will that happen i certainly don't think so, but i think it's important to not talk in absolutes because stupid stuff has been happening lately...

It’s not what it’s worth to me that makes me very selective of where I wear my white dial it’s what it’s worth to the criminal elements that has me concerned plus they all know a Daytona when they see one.

It’s no different than wearing a Day Date or any silly comic book named sports watch. If you’d rather have the money, no matter how much you’ll get for it, than sell it.

If you’re afraid to wear it in public, don’t. Personally, I wear mine anywhere because no one give 2 sh*ts what watch you have on. Use common sense and you’ll be fine.
