Are AD's lying to me?

Okay so I reached out to all the AD's in Houston and New York for a sub date and I received three different answers: 1) They can't help me as they are fully commited for the next few years 2) They invite me over to their boutique to register interest and view their exhibition models 3) They'll call me as soon as one becomes available for me but they can't guarantee a delivery date.

I am wondering, will the ones that tell me they're gonna call me actually call me? and what can I do to increase my chances of getting one in the next year or so?

You have to go to the store. On the phone they think you could be a flipper, so they want to see you in person before they even take down your name.

Yes you must go to the store. They are receiving plenty of watches but have much more demand for them than they can meet. There’s a bit of luck involved being a new customer but in person is the only way to make the connection.

Yes. Lying to you. Plenty of inventory in the back. You need to introduce. Talk. Come back in a month and do it again.

If you don't want to get to know anyone there and put in the time then it's best to pay the 18k and enjoy your watch.

Fair enough. But really, in this current environment an email is highly unlikely going to get you what you want from an AD…

Even visits in person don’t guarantee you will (ever) get a watch.

You’re emailing asking for what is arguably the most popular, recognizable watch in the world. Imagine how many other people are doing the exact same or calling? Dozens a day. I’m guessing you don’t have a purchase history with any of them so you should be happy they even emailed you back. Maybe go by a store in person and build a rapport. There are plenty of ADs out there that want to sell you a watch, but due to the insane market they would feel better knowing the watch is going to someone that will be enjoying it not flipping. It’s like the gold rush. Everyone and their cousin that’s looking to make a quick buck is calling for free money. This is not the way

AD's have to vet their new customers. They don't just go top-to-bottom down a list.

You need to give them a reason to give it to you when they could give it to hundreds over.

At a minimum, go in so they can become familiar with you. At a maximum, buy something else to show you're a serious player. At the end of the day it's a business, they are optimizing for: 1) Make sure you aren't just a flipper
2) Long term ROI of you as a customer 3) The opportunity cost of giving it to you vs. someone else (see #2).

There is a reason some folks can walk in and get a pepsi, kermit, daytona on the spot while hundreds others are told "we have no inventory" and have to wait, while others may never ever have a shot.

What could possibly motivate any of these ADs to sell a watch with a deep waiting list to a rando who sends them an email when every day they have people who make the effort to walk into their stores, including their regular customers, and ask for the very same watch?

Each of the three answers you received represent they exact same effort you put into your inquiry.

Go walk into 2) and have a good chat with them. The other two are politely saying no. Now to be honestly 2 will mostly likely say no unless they get comfortable that you're not a flipper and you keep visiting them.

LOL.

Yes they're lying to you. They're lying to all but a very very few of us and if you have to go on a forum to ask about a sub, you're being lied to.

LOL. Don't worry they're lying to me too, except it's about a stainless daytona.

I was told by multiple ADs they have many people contacting them daily. OP you will have to wait a long time or go grey for instant results.

ADs get a lot of these emails and calls every day.

Virtually every AD wants to see you in store.

Why wouldn’t they call you if you go in, register your interest, are local(ish) and seem genuine. Depending on our rapport, it’s going to take 6-18 months to get one from any AD.

They are being polite. Are you prepared to put the time in and visit the AD regularly and probably have to purchase other items to build a relationship? If the answer is no, I would go grey and end it.

Demand is higher than supply, not a single doubt about it… but these watches are easily accessible for good customers

I could walk in today and get one 1000%

They are all lying. Although some or all of them may not be.*

I suggest going into the shops, talking to people and buying things you want/like from the shops which you hope to be getting your watches from.

* My conclusion is based on some guess work, since I wasn't there and can't read minds. Although it looks as if you weren't there also.

Very smart. You should email ADs in other cities too, like Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami. Even internationally, like Tokyo. Bound to work eventually. They love getting emails like this from customers who don’t live locally.

If like me you don't like the idea of feeding the grey dealer monster, you'll have to spend money in the store on other articles, could be jewelry, other watch brands, or less popular Rolex models. Ask them what kind of spending it would take to be considered for the watch you want.

Of course they’re lying to you. They don’t know you. You don’t know them. Bridge the trust gap and maybe you’ll get it one day.
