The $2.5 million Milgauss sells at auction

A 1958 Milgauss 6541 in top condition has sold at Phillips auctions for $2.5M

A similar version from 1958 sold at Christie’s in 2013 for 317,000 francs ($528,712). Another, sold by Phillips in 2022, fetched just over 300,000 francs.

I suppose there are those of us who think the Milgauss is the coolest watch Rolex ever produced. I realize we are in a minority, but we exist!

Media outlets are reporting this reference was purchased on behalf of Rolex for their archives.

Perezcope made an issue about how the bezel set.
Pretty wild result, it takes at least two to tango, I wonder who was bidding against The Crown, if that is the case they were chasing one of their old gems.

Interesting. Anyone know what the bezel would've been used for in this configuration?

Just a simple timer, similar to Submariner, but with less focus on those 10 minutes...

Woah, that's a lot of money I won't spend on a watch. I could have invested in several watches, I could even start a side watch business haha.

This one was described as the best condition known example and that certainly influenced the sale price.

A relaunch of the Milgauss line should include some of those design cues, including dauphine hands.

Discontinued Rolex Sold for $2.5M - Purchased by Matchmaker

I just read an article on BusinessInsider about a vintage Rolex Milgauss that sold for $2.5 million.

It is nice to hear that the watchmaker was able to purchase it! That will make a good story when the watch is passed down from one generation to another.

It got me thinking about watch stories and how there are probably a lot of good ones from people in this forum. Does anyone wear a watch that they received from their father or grandfather?

You always want what you can’t have - some US based bidder outdone by Rolex’s deep pockets.

That’s what made this one top $2MM

Your title says "matchmaker" but assume you meant "Watchmaker"?

Its a bit puzzling that a Watchmaker would stump up $2.5m for this.

The more likely story is the watchmaker bought it on behalf of a wealthy person, who obviously wanted to remain anonymous.

To question, yes there are many here that wear / or at least keep their inherited piece. I say this because those who sell their inherited watches dont tend to stay on this forum....for long.

I’ve always hoped Rolex would reissue a 6541 style with rotating bezel.

Doesn’t make sense for Rolex to pay that much for a watch that they can easily reproduce using original tools they surely kept somewhere in their archives/storage.

By Watchmaker they mean Rolex bought it for their own museum collection. There’s no passing this watch down.
