consolidation - 8 watches to 2 heavy hitters?

Hi all,

I am in the process of weighing up selling some of my collection that i don't wear to buy two bigger pieces that will get more wrist action. I am in the fortunate position to have other watches in my collection that i still wear, so it isn't a case of only having two if i were to complete the trade.

I would like your opinions on if you think its a fair trade.

Looking to offload...
batman
hulk
pepsi
explorer 2 (white)
blue sky dweller
harrods tudor
43 SD
tudor 54

To purchase
RG olive green DD
PP 5164a

Do you think this is a wise move ? i think i'll have to find around £20K in cash to make it all come together.

Your thoughts are appreciated

consolidation - 8 watches to 2 heavy hitters?

That’s a tough a choice. I would classify a lot of those as expendable. But it would be difficult to part with the Hulk and the Batman. Pepsi too, I suppose.

On the other hand, that is quite a dynamic duo in terms of heavy hitters. I’d probably be inclined to do that. Im assuming that coming up with the extra cash is a lot easier than you’re suggesting.

The other factor for me is that eight watches is too many, but I’m not sure I’d be happy with only two. But if you move forward, you could always add a third down the road.

I would keep the BB54 personally - resale will be close to 0 and its an awesome watch!

Consolidating is fine but ending up with only two watches although great would not work for me. Keep the batman or Pepsi, hulk and sell all the rest (not a fan of Skydweller) and buy both adding cash. DD is doable at retail with a bit of patience, Aquanaut go grey if you’re not a client already

I did the same thing and currently only have 2 PM pieces and that's enough for me to rotate between

That’s a hell of a lot to give up plus money as well but if it’s what will make you happy then go for it I say. At the end of it you’ll have 2 big hitters

Keep either the Batman or Pepsi, whichever you like more, and the Hulk.

Without knowing the values of the watches you are proposing to move or the price of the two watches you are wanting to move in it make it difficult to offer an accurate opinion. The consolidation game is strong and the two watches you want are nice. I would add in a SS diver for a three watch collection but maybe you just keep the BB. If the money is right and it is what you want to do then go for it.

I like the concept! Those two “heavy hitters” don’t call to me but the idea of moving several pieces you don’t wear often, for two more valuable options that will get wrist time, is attractive.

Sure why not. Personally I’d be inclined to hang on to one SS Rolex but it’s not a must. They are easy to acquire if needed. Something like the expII which you won’t get more than msrp for anyways.

The 2 pieces that you aspire to trade for, are no doubt incredible watches!. However, keep in mind that there are situations and places that we can encounter or visit, in which a daily beater or a less attention getter wrist presence my work in your favor. For this reasons, I would keep 1 or 2 of the ones that you already have in your collection.

I've not researched the various values to say whether it's financially a good deal (plus I'm sure you've already done that yourself), but ultimately if you aren't wearing the 8 watches you're looking to offload, then what's the point in keeping them? I'm very much of the opinion that watch buying isn't rational, and it's all about keeping the heart happy. If those two pieces will be worn and bring you enjoyment, then I say do it.

Yikes …. That’s a lot to give up, plus 20k …

That would give me pause especially if you’ve never worn a DD or a Patek on a rubber strap.

I’m all for consolidation into watches you’ll wear more often. For me it’s a no. I’d be inclined to add one of your two rather than do a wholesale swap as you’re suggesting.

I agree I would seek out both new watches to see how they feel and wear on you first. If you will be happy with two, go for it.

I would be comfortable offloading a few of those watches but keep the BLRO, Sky-Dweller and polar ExpII. Slowly add to your collection. Those are great heavy hitters!

I like it! My thoughts on this. Yesterday I was at my AD and he got a huge shipment of stock, I was trying on DDs, Platinum Daytona, and few others.

Same thought as you occurred to me, I would consolidate. Older I get more I wear one watch or another. I don't rotate as often.

Not in a million years! You are lucky enough to have a wonderful collection, and want to demolish it to have 2 “look at me” pieces. Bad move, in my book. More importantly, I think you’ll regret it.

I support consolidation down to several special pieces. I'd recommend keeping your favorite stainless steel watch among your current collection, as you add the PP and DD.

Is the 5164 retail? If not, never. If so, I guess if that’s the one you really want…

No I would not. But I would reduce a 8 piece collection anyway. You can just wear one at the time.

No, here’s why:

batman
hulk
pepsi

explorer 2 (white)
blue sky dweller
harrods tudor
43 SD
tudor 54

From the ones in bold, you clearly have an affinity to the submariner/GMT case shape. You’re giving away 6 watches that, realistically, are not so different from each other and none of what you’re replacing it with give that same aesthetic.
