Diversification cure for hype

Ever since I made a decision to diversify into other brands & styles (e.g. independent, dress etc.) my attention towards hyped watches (e.g. Rolex SS) has gone down to zero.

It might be that as I reached 40s my taste in watches has changed, but I also think it’s to do with viewing watch collection through a different lens, namely unrelated to value retention, which is very freeing.

Anyway, just a random thought on a slow Wednesday afternoon.

Great random thought. Enjoying timepieces, my experience, ebbs and flows over the decades. Could be brands, or styles/types... or from mainly business wear timepieces and then years later ebbing into a change to nearly all sports models.

Or throw all that out and get C1 Bel Canto and M.A.D.1s... or Mickey Mouses (Mice?).

imho in the end what really matters is that you... enjoy your time

This, exactly!

Great thoughts! Also have similar thinking but can’t help the odd weakness in thinking about still wanting a sub bluesy two tone!

Lots of other great brands to explore.

I will always own at least 1 or 2 Rolex

I could not agree more. While I do love Rolex and have 2 beautiful pieces, I have very much enjoyed diversifying my collection as well. I was definitely Rolex-blind for a while, but the extreme circumstances led me to pick my head up a bit and I'm so glad I did.

Me too, however I’m not chasing Rolex any longer as I did in the past.

Great thoughts! I'm not into hype or hype watches, but I must admit that my favorite Rolexes are among the hardest to get at retail (white dial Daytona, BLRO on Jubilee, Submariner), but they're my favorites not because of hype but because they're classics. I think it's great to have one or two or three or four or five Rolexes in a collection, but I'd personally want the bulk of my collection to be from other diverse brands and styles.

I do love other brands and have been diversifying my collection but since I have access to Rolex from my AD, I have a few Rolexes as well including most of the hyped uo models.

I feel the same.

I sold my ROO's, I'm down to my Diver which will be gone after the winter. What was once a grail, is now my least worn piece. My style has changed and I no longer feel comfortable wearing AP. Even if a RO was presented, I wouldn't bite.

I sold off every Rolex except the first DJII I purchased due to having sentimental value.

I'd like to get into more LUC's. My values align with the brand, their direction, as well as client base. I'm looking forward to this chapter.

Rolex got me into watches, but independents and smaller makers (if that’s the word) keep me in it.

Only Rolex I have left is the first one I got - 16710; dreamed of being a jet setting business man as a kid. Not much jet setting these days, though.

I love what Chopard are doing with their LUC line and I’m in fact taking delivery of the new salmon dial 1860 at the end of this year.

Great way of putting it. When I wear my Rolex, I set it and forget it. On the other hand, when I wear my Lange or VC, I truly appreciate the attention to detail, craftsmanship etc., and this leads to a very different experience.

I understand hype but it only matters if you are paying attention to the hype. Buy and wear the watches you like and go on with it.

That is certainly true. However, sometimes a watch that you really like on the basis of looks, functionality etc. ends up being in the hype category, because we live in a world where information overload is a fact of life and social influence drives demand. Once you cast a wider net, those things become less relevant, at least in my case.

Lots of great brands & references to choose from. No reason to limit yourself.

Congrats in advance. This may well be the prettiest watch released last year.

Agreed, it is good to check out other stuff.
Gets super boring seeing the same hype collections of the same 5 watches.
Enjoy!
