Some Rolex Models More “Difficult” to Wind Than Others?
My wife brought out a few of her watches the other day to select which one to wear for an outing.
I noticed her Ladies Datejust (Ref. 69178) did not wind as easily as one of her other Rolex models (35 mm Yachtmaster). The winding isn’t gritty or anything, just requires a bit more effort relative to the other Rolex. All Rolex watches have been movement serviced by RSC within the last 3 years. I think her Datejust had always taken a little more effort to wind than the Yachtmaster, but this slipped my memory bank as I am obviously not winding and wearing her watches. Questions for our Experts: Are certain Rolex models known to require a little more effort when winding versus others? Should we be concerned about the winding on the Datejust? Yes I'd say so. I have two very smooth winding, my Sub and Daytona. My older air-king is not as smooth and the time setting is a little stickier.

My wife’s 20 year old 28mm OP seems more difficult to wind than all our modern Rolexes. And yes, it was recently serviced. I really can’t tell that much of a difference between all our modern ones.

My vintage OP is not as smooth. All my others are new, so easier to wind. Kat Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Many different movements so one would expect they don’t wind the same.
The smoothest and buttery soft winding experience from the watches I own is the 9001 from the SkyD and the grittiest the 2135 from the Mrs 26mm DJ. That one even after a full service feels rough.

Best winding watch I've had: Daytona. Smooth as silk.
Worst: 3235. Super gritty to the point that it's a bit unpleasant. |

My 16750 is a bit tough winding. It’s obviously a bit vintage though, so I guess it makes sense.
My Sub and Datejust have the same movement and subsequently wind the same. My Milgauss however winds so easily and smoothly out of the bunch. My Grand Seiko isn’t tough per say, but doesn’t give a very pleasant feel when winding it at all.

Automatic watches are not made to be wound that often - always worried about stem issues.
this can be avoided if you start wearing them in the morning anyway - you can just shake them a few times before putting on and it'll be fully wound by the end of the day anyway BTW the hardest wind of any watch I have had is the Breitling B01 movement, on my navitimer. Apparently this is a well known aspect of this movement. |
