Anyone successfully convert from multi to single watch owner?

Another consolidation watch post. I would describe myself as someone who believes they need multiple watches, brands, and styles to be satisfied. However, I do find myself wondering if I sold my small collection and consolidated to one watch, could I be satisfied? I think I could consolidate my small collection into a single nice grail watch (i.e. $40-$60k max range). I currently own SS and SS/18k watches. I do have an interest in gold watches, but it would require consolidation of my collection and I wonder if I would be comfortable wearing an all-gold watch as my one and only, even if insured. I'm more curious to hear from others who have successfully and/or unsuccessfully attempted this feat! Thanks in advance for the comments.

I did not, but I created the topic about it, I am going to be fine with a SS Breitling Superocean Héritage Chronograph and with a yellow gold Rolex Submariner (Bluesy)

I have consolidated but never down to just one. I think one PM and one SS would be great....if I could do it. Don't think I could do just one PM watch though

No! I can’t be a one watch person. I am trying to get down to about 25. I did sell 7 over the past several weeks, from my eBay store. Only 60 more to go, to reach my goal….

At this point, I could narrow it down to my Sprite and Navitimer 01. One would be too hard.

One no. Absolute minimum for me, 4

If only one: Rolex BLNR
If only two: Royal Oak and DD40
If only three: Daytona, Royal Oak and Patek AC
If only four: Daytona, Royal Oak, DD40 and Patek AC - my current goal

I have 5.

2 or 3 is all I need. But I’m not downsizing anytime soon, maybe never.

This reminds me of a quote by Mark Twain.
“Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times.”
So yes, I have done this plenty of times but they just keep popping back up.

For an enthusiast, "need" doesn't enter the equation.

If you are not an enthusiast then one, or maybe two could be OK..... I suppose.

I did it. I sold my 116506, 116500LN white and old style daytona meteorite and bought my GMT Meteorite as my only watch. I wear him all the time. I love it. No more thinking which watch I want to wear. BUT the itch isn’t gone and I find myself looking for other watches to buy. I made a promise to myself not to buy them without a real special occasion and then i can treat myself to a real special watch.

I'm down to 6.

I think i could get down to 3 or 4 but then i would have two empty slots in my watch box, and i know i would just fill them back in.

So now i'm in the mode of, if i want something new, one has to go.

Its not a forever question.......Yes, today consolidate 2,3,4 steel watches for a PM grail.......enjoy and be satisfied.

But you continue to earn monies and see new shiny things to purchase. Do tho ensure you have enough wrist time to enjoy your current collection.

There is a lot to be said about the watch that is worn 24/7 for 20+ years accompanying you on a life journey.

Yes, but I think collecting was never for me.

Had a lone Sub for 4 years, added a second watch, didn't like having multiple watches, so traded both back to a single watch again, where I intend to remain.

I may be wrong, but I think collecting watches is far more about, "Collecting," than, "Watches."

I would guess that most watch-collectors also collect other things like knives, pens, guns, wine, etc. Whereas single-watch-owners don't collect anything else.

This is an astute point. I really don't like collecting anything either and in fact hate excessive crap lying around. I'm always quick to donate things I don't use.

Inspite of that, I still have a very small watch collection of Hamiltons, G shocks and some watches people have gifted me.

I really only wear my Sub now though.

I have no interest in trying. While I have far fewer watches than I used to I enjoy waking up in the morning and having a choice of which watch to wear. I don’t lead a luxurious lifestyle by any measure but that is one luxury I allow myself.

Someone who's into watches will want to buy again after consolidating, sooner or later. I haven't changed my 12-piece collection in the past 3 years. I wear them, enjoy them, and let them be. There is pleasure in appreciating what you've got. As much as I like the idea of adding another PM piece, there is no way I would liquidate the collection to get it. I am attached to the watches I've worn for the past 20 years. Plenty of nice memories while wearing them. They've become a small part of me.
