Transitioning from Expl.36: Seeking advice on the next addition!

I've had the pleasure of owning a BLNR for 8 years. A couple of years ago, I decided to sell it and switch to the Expl. 36 124270. It was a bold move, and as many of you can imagine, after a year of ownership, the Expl. started feeling somewhat dainty and "basic" to me. So I added the YM40 blue dial, and I couldn't be happier! Both pieces fit well on my 6.3-inch wrist, but I've decided to part with the Explorer and explore how to complement my YM.

Last October, I put my name on the list for the classic Sub. date. However, I'm concerned it might be large for my wrist, as it felt wearable but on the bigger side when I tried it at the AD store. Now, I'm also considering the DJ36, and yesterday, I asked the forum for their opinions on the dial selection.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations on which direction I should take. Thanks a lot!

A Sub is always a great choice. Since you had a BLNR for 8 years I think you could pull it off. The OP line is another to consider as well.

With a 6.3in wrist, I think you'll miss having a 36mm watch. The Submariner won't be comfortable.

Personally, I struggle with my GMT sometimes and I have a 6.7in flat wrist.

A Steel Ceramic Daytons would be perfect for you! Good for your wrist size (I have similar wrist size) and also the most sought after Rolex model.

Out of curiosity… why did you sell the BLNR?

IMHO the Sub Will wears about the same only a touch larger.

Get another Explorer.

You have sold the perfect watch and will realise this once you work out the sub will be too big.
If you must, get an older sub or Explorer2 before they went large.

I would not recommend the Sub for you. A DJ would compliment the YM better than the Sub.

^^^ 100%

The new 41mm Submariner wears larger and clunkier to me, especially vs the BLNR on Jubilee. I have a 6.75" flat wrist and love my BLRO on Jubilee, but I wear my 36mm Explorer more than any other watch in my collection. There is a lot to be said for all-day comfort and worry-free wear IMO

Consider selling the YM and getting back the BLNR.

Actually I wasn't using the GMT complication and felt the bezel was too busy, in-your-face. kind of thing. At that time I thought that it was time to move to a low-key time piece. The mistake was that I didn't add the Expl. keeping the BLNR and decide what to do later on. However, I am fully satisfied with the YM.

Fully satisfied then why are you looking for another watch? Never heard the BLNR described as too busy and in your face, the blue dial YM would fit that description though. Hopefully you’ll get to wherever you’re going

Sub! I love the new 41 case. It's the watch I wear most of my entire collection.

My wrist is the same size. My Exp 1 is very comfortable and my DJ 36 on jubilee is also very comfortable. My Sub and GMT still look good but not as “all day wearable”. The Sub has a thick case back so it tends to stand up from my wrist. YMMV.

I agree, the 5 digit 40mm models would suit a smaller wrist better IMO.

Wimbledon DJ in 36mm/fluted/jubilee. Paired with the YM 40 in blue it would make for a very lively duo.

Biased but sub will forever be my favorite watch offered by Rolex.

On the size question, your BLNR should be a good proxy. You wore it and I assume enjoyed it for 8 years, so I don't think you will find the sub too big once you get used to it. It probably felt like it was wearing large at the AD bc you have been wearing the explorer.

SS Sub with Date is the watch.
I wish every watch enthusiast could have one.

I basically have the same sized wrist as you, and have been a Sub 41 wearer for the past 2 years. I'm just about to "downgrade" myself to an Explorer 36.

The Sub was my dream watch, and always will be. However, I have to admit to myself, that when I see it in the mirror or in photos, that it looks a little big on me. It fits, but only just about. And recently, I've wanted something that looks a little more tailored on my wrist, and yet is still a sports watch.

I feel for us smaller-waisted guys, the Exp36 is really the only option.

Funny, my father went the opposite direction. He has (no longer wears) a 16622(?) and now has the latest 36 Exp1.

Have the same wrist like you but flat so I can wear both Sub 41, Exp2 and a Luminor 44. It's all about how it feels, none of them have lugs overhanging but only Exp2 feels like it would be nicer that it's a tad smaller.

The key thing about Sub41 is the clasp is way bigger then on your GMT because of the glidelock.

Also, keep in mind that GMT and Sub41 differ by something of 0.3mm in diameter in reality and the Sub is somewhat thicker but L2L is the same. But the clasp could be a deal breaker/game changer.
