Hey Guys -
Brand new to the forum and the world of watches. My grandfather passed and left me his old rolex. I was wondering if anyone could give me any information at all about this rolex? Not sure what I have here, and would like to know if its worth it to restore? Should I keep it? Sell it? ETC Let me know if you need any more information! CANT POST LINKS TO PHOTOS YET :( |

No, you can't post links, but anybody can attach photos as long as they meet the size requirements of the file type.
If correct you have an early Oyster Perpetual that is likely worth restoring unless totally thrashed. Usually a 34mm so slightly smaller than today pie pan sized watches. This should be considered a heirloom as market value is not terribly high and it may cost nearly as much to restore as it is worth. Parts are hard to find so you should seek somebody knowledgeable with these early examples.

The 6084 is great - pretty sure it's Edmund Hillarys watch he wore to everest. I have one with 3 - 6- 9 on the dial, 34mm but quite pleasing to the eye.

I believe that he was presented with a 6084 by Rolex after summiting Everest. Members of several Everest expeditions, including Hillary, wore 36mm "Ovetonne" references on the mountain at times (e.g. ref 6098). As you probably know, Hillary is believed to have left his Rolex in camp and summited wearing a Smiths watch.

That looks nice, and quite original. It is probably worth 2 - 4k, but the market for the 34mm older watches is quite small. Do you have any accesories with it - bracelet, box etc.
