Another stupid nickname
I can't stand the horrible forced nicknames we get these days and I never use them myself, but most of the time I can at least vaguely see the connection to the name. However today I came across a new one and I have absolutely no idea why it's remotely relevant to the watch.
A guy on one of the FB Rolex groups called the 42mm titanium Yachtmaster the "Hellboy". No-one batted an eyelid in the comments, so any ideas where that came from, or is it just another clown trying to coin a random nickname in the hope it will take off?

Hello no, boy!
Not a fan of the nicknames although I admit that I have previously used one of them.... This one is no different.

Could the titanium Yachtmaster be called the "Pelagos II"?

The point of nicknames for things is they arrive organically. A “panda” dial is pretty common parlance among watch collectors and used across brands. Same goes for “Pepsi” bezel. Some Rolex watches have nicknames that make no sense, but over time have stuck: Steve McQueen Explorer II, for example. He never wore a 1655, but it was misremembered for long enough that the community adopted it.
The reason many of us are annoyed by nicknames these days are because of how forced they are. People are literally coming up with a “Bruce Wayne” nickname for the GMT before it was even officially announced. Now if you don’t think that is pathetic and lame, how would you feel if someone showed up at work one day and just made up their own nickname? There’s a whole episode of Seinfeld about it. The watches have reference numbers. They have model names. Just use them. The “Batman” is a 126710BLNR. Just call it the BLNR. Even Rolex called the BLNR bezel the “day/night” bezel in their initial press. |

Yeah, I actually like some, pretty much the ones you named. But Ghost? Stretching it. Hellboy I really can't get. Still, it doesn't bother me, just find it perplexing how it originated.

Some nicknames or slang names make sense as not all of geek out on the catalog and remember every SKU number.
That being said, not sure why now every model has to have a nickname. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

As bad as ‘Pikachu’ or ‘Cookie Monster’ ?
See it for what it is, bit of fun, bit of nonsense, catchy names replace remembering many digit numbers, they’re catchy so some people find that easier .. big deal ..

I loathe nicknames. I get its the fun and more fast way to address watches - lets face it, not everyone especially non-watch Geeks will speak using model ref. numbers. The ones that I think work are 'Pepsi' and 'Hulk', and I'd also throw 'James Cameron' in there. Those 3 are so synonymous with the watch itself, it's easy to see why those watches have those names. Having said that...I personally don't reference these watches in this way.
As far as other names go such as Sprite, Starbucks, Batman, Batgirl, Panda, Pikachu, Cookie Monster, Rootbeer(!), Bruce Wayne: I cannot bring myself to use them. |

Never understood the obsession with superheroes, and never understood forcing superhero nicknames onto watches.

All GMTs with a two colour bezel have that function haha ---- I don't hate the nicknames but I rarely use them. I'll only use them if I'm talking to a non "serious" watch person, because they'll know what I'm referring to if I say "Batman/Sprite/Pepsi" etc. Most of the time I'll use the suffix of the reference, BLNR, VTNR etc. It does grind my gears how the community has to instantly label a new watch though, Bruce Wayne drives my nuts, because it makes even less sense than Batman. Talking of names, though - I'm a little bit more at peace with real people's names associated with a watch because they wore it. John Mayer, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen (I know I know, he didn't wear it) It's interesting there doesn't seem to be a nickname for a basic black bezelled Submariner... i wonder why |

Nothing’s in a bunch my friend, least of all my panties. For a fleeting moment yesterday I just wondered where that nickname would’ve come from, and whether it was somehow clever or witty. But you’re probably right in as much as it likely means absolutely nothing at all.

Thanks Brian. The long established ones seem to make sense (to me at least) but I have to ignore the forced ones that materialise almost before a watch is launched because I don't have the faintest idea what they mean. My favourite nickname (non Rolex as it happens) is "Evil Nina", which actually has an historical origin in the 1960s based on fact (and represents an intersection of three things I have liked/admired for years).

Nicknames are cringey to me. I was at the Paris airport looking at watches and a guy comes in speaking french talking to an AD and the only word I recognize is Batman.
Just not a good look IMO. |

Most of the established nicknames never really bothered me - Coke, Pepsi, Hulk, Batman...Seems like there is a lot of effort to be the guy that came up with a new name, most of the current efforts are cringey and contrived. This one is no exception, pretty terrible.

Ya. How dare people talk about things to get a reaction.
I mean, we all certainly don't utilize any medium where we post about things to get reactions and spark a discussion. No way, only those nickname making losers! |
