Icon11 NewBie here have questions on potential purchase

I want to buy myself a watch as a symbol of my career achievement.
I was looking for a 31mm datejust with these features:
  • o All gold
  • o Fluted bezel
  • o Diamond dial
  • o Presidential bracelet
  • o All factory
I found this watch on ebay from QD watches, also known as quality watches from San Diego.
The seller was very quick to respond to all my questions and offered a discount if I paid by wire and bought directly from them. But buying through ebay would cost 2k more.
I need some advice from this forum on these things:
  • - Is the price fair for this watch? 10k for 1984 watch
  • - How can I tell if the watch is genuine before buying it?
  • - If I pay by wire and the seller sends the watch, but the watch is different, what can I do?I plan to take it to a local jeweler for verification.
  • - Is the price fair for this watch?
  • - Are there any questions I should be asking the seller?
  • - If Anyone has any references on the seller, please let me know
I am not sure how to post links :(

I know this one is missing the bracelet, but it appears to be the model you are talking about and it sold for $5000. https://shop.hodinkee.com/products/1...32195750690891

and here's one for 8k https://www.chrono24.com/rolex/1984-...0_PZwkWp&pos=1

so depending on condition ( and does it include box/paper etc) the price may be reasonable, but I'd expect it to be a pretty stellar example.

Always buy the seller. You should be able to do an online check of this concern for their reputation. They should also have Ebay feedback. To me the biggest issues with an older watch are third party work and multiple refinishings.

Photos would help you.
Have you checked out the trusted resellers that get recommended on the forum? Buying from one of them should make for an easy transaction.

is this the one?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/18632011553...cAAOSwyv1l4RwZ

if so it actually looks like it's in great condition. i can't speak on the price but it seems to pretty much be in the middle of what you see on various websites. if they're offering you 2000 less to go direct then it's a great deal but with a wire there's no protection. also keep in mind a lot of these will be in bad condition because they're old and would have been abused/polished so something like this would be worth paying more for

I wonder if it has all the links?
Weird for seller to offer to purchase outside of ebay.
I would pass.
Contact our Trusted Sellers, then you can buy with confidence.
Spending $10K and worrying about it is not worth it. You don’t know who or if serviced and by whom. Good amount of stretch in bracelet.

I wouldn’t buy a watch I found on eBay outside of eBay regardless of the savings. With eBay you have their authenticity guarantee and recourse, without eBay you risk losing all of your money. And if you’re asking for advice here you clearly feel some doubt. I would stick with eBay or with one of this forum’s trusted sellers.

I’d pass on that, and call one of the trusted sellers here, and ask them to source you one in VG condition. Go to classified section and check with one of the Rolex Boutique sellers. All are trusted. I’ve used Takuya.

Ask the seller to send you the watch for inspection prior to payment being made.

Trust goes both ways?

As many others have said “always trust the seller”. When you spend that kind of money you don’t want to worry about all of the “what-ifs”. There are many really good trusted sellers on the forum and I know several that will go out of their way to get you a watch that is definitely real, and in the condition that you want. I would NEVER do an eBay deal outside of eBay. In fact that is strongly frowned upon by eBay. And you lose all of your protections. Good luck on your quest.

Welcome to the forum!! Can’t speak to an older reference like you found but I would echo the sentiments of some of the other members to reach out to our trusted sellers for help sourcing this piece. In no particular order Takuya (Tahn), DavidSW (David), SohAIS (Aamir), JUSTROLEXES (Tony), bodybump (Oscar), OCRolexguy (Patrick), and AU_911t (Chase) can all help you with your search, and you can be sure you won’t get scammed or deal with any other nonsense.

If not a new watch from an AD these gentlemen are the only ones I’d do business with

She can save a whole lot of money going preowned for this piece.
