The watch that started my Rolex Journey

Growing up I became mesmerized by my Dad’s watch. He had a TT watch with a crown on the dial. I was 6 yrs old and loved looking at the crown. I had no idea what brand it was but I asked him if he would get one for me. He chuckled but said nothing. We were on vacation in Acapulco when he surprised me with a watch. I was excited but then turned sad when it didn’t have a crown. I still wore it as it was a nice little watch. Only later did I learn about Rolex and how expensive they were although back in 1960 he bought his for 300 dollars. I kept yearning for a Rolex. When I got my first job,m at age 16, i saved up money all summer and went to Sweeneys Jewelers with my mom to buy a rolex. She tried to get me to buy a DJ but it was like 1,500 but I saw a watch that said Submariner and I fell in love with and bought it for 980 dollars without tax. I wore this watch everywhere I went. It was my only watch until in 1995, my Dad gifted me his hardly used OQ DD for my graduation but my everyday watch remained my 1680 Sub. In 2006, my wife, pregnant, and I went to Playa Del Carmen. While in the pool, I noticed my sub had water under the crystal. I took to get serviced and since my wife bought me a TT Daytona, i put the sub in the safe. I began adding more Rolex watches but recently, I decided to wear my #1 again. So here is my 1680 sub, now 44 yrs old. Sorry for the long post.

Very good condition. My 16610 from 1991 is not as sharp as yours. I daily’d it for 15 years but polished maybe 2-3 times

Great story Rick.
I would love to have a 1680, but happy to settle for its grandson, my 16610.

Wow, now that is a story and a wonderful one to read.

It is so nice to read about people aspiring to own, saving up for, then buying and ultimately owning their watch, and then using it for many many years as their daily wear, brilliant.

I am sure that the adventures that your Submariner has had could no doubt fill a book.

It is great to see that it is still part of your life and will be out on more adventures in the future.

Thanks for sharing your story.

They don't make them like that any more. Thank you for sharing. My gateway watch was the Explorer II, presently in for it's first service. You've got over 30 years on my Rolex collection.

Very cool story. Reminds me of my first Rolex Submariner Date around 1980. My wife bought it for me and it retailed around $900 but she paid around $780.

I did! Great observation. I switched it back as I really prefer the oyster bracelet.
