Do you like ghost/faded bezels?

Hello everyone,

What is your opinion of ghost bezels/faded bezels?

Personally I think it adds a lot of character to the watch and I tend to look for them in 5 digits. Hence my 16710 having a ghost bezel.

How do you like it? (Picture is mine of my 16710).

I don't like faded anything really as it just excessively aged, but you do you.

I like "faded" bezel inserts when the color has been changed by UV, in a natural way. The red part of your insert has faded a lot (too much) compared to the blue part, this is less appealing to me.

Is this your warch?

Nope, I like brand new bezel inserts. I am against polish, but definitely for spanking new inserts.

Love them. It’s on of the things i like the least on modern Rolex, they will never age. I understand why, and from a brand perspective, it makes a lot of sense. But i love seeing aged inserts and dials.

Major flaw of the alum bezels, which is why RLX no longer uses them.

Depends on the watch. Sometimes it adds amazing character and sometimes not

Honestly, I couldn't wear a watch with such obvious fade, especially GMT's where there are two colors and only one has deteriorated. I don't think it 'adds character' - I think it looks awful - but, I freely admit to being a little OCD.

Each to their own.

Not a fan at all. Also, I can’t appreciate spider/cracked dials which some love too.

I think a slight even fade is nice. An overly faded or just 1 color faded looks off in my eyes. Also don't like them brand new either at least if it were mine. I use my watches and like that it shows I wear them.

Love it, and I can see why it would have a premium added to it. If this question were asked in the vintage forum, you’d likely get a different response.

I think a patinated Rolex or Speedmaster worn with distressed jeans, an aged leather jacket, and boots is the best look.

I also dislike how modern watches don't age naturally. I want my watch to discolour and change as most things in life do. When a watch’s metal gets scratched but the bezel and dial still look pristine, it just doesn't look right to me. This is probably why most modern collectors are so careful about scratches. I don’t blame them.

I’m not a lover of the gradual fade. I want the Bezel colour and Font to remain as pronounced as possible, no matter the weather conditions. A few minor scratches is fine, but a bezel fade would likely force me to replace it.

I can see the appeal of the ghost look but when it’s done artificially and poorly just to extract more $$$$ I lose interest. As Omar mentions in the vintage section you probably wouldn’t get too many fans

I wouldn’t pick a faded bezel for my own collection so I’ll just live vicariously through the members that post pictures of theirs

If it’s faded whilst I’ve had it, no problem, I’m not keen on other people’s wear.

I am glad Rolex switched to ceramic inserts so no more problems with faded colors and the shine of the modern ones last forever.

Because of the hype over these faded bezel inserts and the fact that today many are willing to pay extra for them, today most you see for sale are artificially aged, the ones that fade mostly are the old Pepsi coke inserts.
