Market Dynamic: WG Daytona value loss vs SS?

I am new to horology and just purchased a new 126610LV and love it! I would like a Daytona next and am surprised that the SS (126500LN) commands such a premium while the WG (126509) sell at or below MSRP/RRP.

Why does this dynamic exist?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your LV.

SS professional references like the Daytona are in high demand. Partly because of their relative value compared to the same watch in precious metal.

The explanation for the price difference is the obvious one, supply and demand. There's nothing more to it.

Going to preface, by saying this is just an opinion.

1. White gold doesn't have the flash for the price, like yellow gold or rose gold does.
2. Typically buying a precious medal watch people want to see the money they spent visually.
3. White gold is in a similar color wheel as stainless steel.

That being said, white gold Daytonas are great!
As well as the yellow and rose gold models.

Everyone has their own preferences on what precious metal they like.

I feel like if you are buying through a 3rd party or not authorised dealer, then precious metal is definitely the way to go when buying either a stainless or gold Daytona.

This SS watch desirability extends to many brands PP for example. Forget that PM makes a watch cost more in manufacturing as cost of the material means very little to its end price point. Generally, PM will also be the one discounted first and take the highest depreciation after sale. You buy a PM model for you as the most important reason.

The real reality of a SS Daytona for most people is they will never get one through their AD even with $ix figure spending on other jewelry. It’s like lottery odds, yet people win every day but you don’t plan your retirement around winning.

Stainless Steel watches are the ones that are collected and traded throughout the world, therefore there is a high demand for them.

High demand determines marketability in the secondary market, not what the item is made from or what is stamped on a dial.

As long as there are more people seeking a Stainless Daytona than there are available, secondary prices will be high.

I've not worn a white gold Rolex, but I've read many times on here owners of white gold pieces say they won't go back to stainless steal because of the weight difference

if it's a daytona, then no, you're still better off going through your authorized dealer. even the gold and platinum daytonas are going to cost you more via a gray dealer vs the AD.

However, if it's a submariner, then yes, grey dealer all day long.

Fewer folks can afford the WG model, thus overall lower demand per unit at retail than the SS. Those who can afford PM tend to want the more psychological bang for the buck they get with yellow or rose gold.

Agree. Earlier this year I purchased my first PM Daytona from my AD (RG on OF). I no longer have that burning desire for a SS Daytona. In fact, I am leaning more and more towards PM for any future watch purchases. Hard to describe, but the PM watch just feels nicer on the wrist.

I'm in a similar spot where I'm looking at both SS and PM models. I'm heavily leaning towards buying PM on the grey market. The savings is too substantial to warrant buying "new" (only potential benefit being the SA "spend" angle) but yes, as you and other have stated, it's quite striking that PM resale prices drop almost across all models (a few exceptions) and the popular SS models appreciate (at least in today's market... but those gaps are narrowing)
