Which Blue Dial Watch? 116509 vs 26715ST

I’m curious about what the folks on TRF think between these two amazing watches. I would buy at gray market prices, and they are not too far apart in terms of pricing. The AP is 38mm and the Daytona is 40mm. However, with the AP’s bracelet integration, I think they wear fairly similar. Thoughts on which blue dial to choose: white gold Daytona or steel Royal Oak Chrono?

FWIW, here is my current line up:

While the AP is nice, the Daytona is gorgeous.

Tough decision OP. I would be torn between the two as well. I did read that AP's chrono movements aren't the most robust and tend to get faulty after sometime.. That pushed me towards the daytona. I do hope to have a chance to own a 38mm ROC in future, but I'll go for the older 26315st blue / silver combo.

Daytona

It just has more of what I love and in WG is more special than steel.

I would go daytona here. Personally cannot stand 4:30 date windows on any watch.

Both watches wear similarly but imo the AP will look smaller on the wrist compared to the Daytona.

I would get the Daytona now and a 3-hander RO later (or consolidate your collection and get it now )

The Daytona for me. I prefer the looks and that it has a reputation for being robust.

The ROC is more legible, the Daytona will run better.

I can only speak about that Daytona as I owned that model. My husband got called for one right after it was discontinued, so he bought it. After a short time he was tired of struggling to read the time and found the chrono about useless. So he gave it to me. The size was ok for my small wrist but yes, hard to read. I use the chrono function a lot, found that cumbersome and yes, hard to read. We sold it to TRF member.

Last week I got a 41mm Navitimer. I like it much better and can read it much easier. Some watch makers rank its movement as good or better than the Daytona movement.
He purchased an IWC pilot chrono 43. MUCH easier to read and use. Such a nice watch. He finds it better than the Daytona except for the power reserve.

My guess would be that AP at 38mm would be useless as far as chrono usage.

If you really need or want a watch to use the chrono and don’t need to be in Rolex or AP I would look at get above mentioned watches

Both are great watches, I’d personally go with the 116509 but you win with either choice here. For me, the Daytona wears better.

I like the collection, nice diversity.

The Daytona. WG, nicer shade of blue of the dial and better movement, one of the best chrono movements.

Daytona. The blue dial on that 116509 is striking, I'm also thinking of picking one up soon.

Although can't go wrong with either!

I had a RO, i sold it for my world time. I don't really like the direction AP is heading.

I am not a huge Daytona guy, but in this case I would go with the gold Rolex.

Its a bigger watch but the vacheron overseas chrono blue dial could be an option. And Gen 2 has Big date windows vs the 4:30 spot if that is a thing for you.

OP what will you be issuing the watch for? As a daily the Daytona is better. As a special occasion watch the AP is way more special. I tried both on (41mm ROC though) and they have completely different looks. The Daytona is beautiful but much more ordinary in design. The ROC is more of a statement piece. I do love both of them, especially in the configurations you’ve selected and I don’t think you could make a wrong choice.

Currently, I rotate my Pepsi, Zenith, and Explorer as my daily watches. I wear the LV, Cartier, and Ed White on weekends. This new watch would be for dinners and special occasions.

Thank you, everyone, for your feedback and thoughts. Keep them coming! This is such a hard decision for me. I think both are amazing.

I don’t particularly care for either. I’d go with a Cartier Santos with a blue dial.

Another Daytona vote.

I really like AP’s and forgive me for saying because many disagree I’m sure, but I just don’t see the value in them. The Rolex is gold vs the AP’s steel, higher water resistance, movement is a great movement that’s a higher vph than the AP.

The AP is a cool watch. I just don’t see it at that price range vs a WG Daytona

Not trying to bash AP. I do like it, just can’t wrap my head around the value of them much any more.

I've already shared my thoughts earlier, but you mentioned the prices were similar.

Is this true? The 116509 you can find for low 40k, where the AP is in the 50s.

AP for me. More of a statement piece than a Daytona. Plus, you can add some more diversity by adding the AP to your collection.

The Daytona photo makes it look like a black ceramic bezel with steel trim like the 126 series have. That would be a great look.

FWIW, here is my current line up:

I have the Daytona with the charcoal dial.

They wear similarly size wise (having tried the AP)

At retail, I'd take the AP.

Grey, Daytona all day every day. WG is quite special. Its a better movement, no question.

Readability is kind of a moot point for me. If you want an accurate, legible, chronoraph buy a G Shock.

No one buys these watches because they need a chrono.
