Tudor stores in lower class shopping malls

Yes I know I'm being snobby, but I don't think it's good for their brand.

I was in a shopping mall today in a suburban town with around 100k people. Most of the residents live in public housing.

The shopping mall is kind of run down, and has a poor vibe.

Tudor has a store there.

I don't think Tudor should be doing this. Having a store in a mall aimed at working class and unemployed people just makes the watches look "cheap".

There's a reason Rolex, Breguet, Patek Philippe, and so on avoid malls like this. It's not just the lack of sales, it's protecting the brand from being associated with poor people.

Anyone agree with me on this?

Yes, Rolex and Cartier just pulled out of a lower and mall in Orlando. With that the store closed down.

The Tudor boutiques that I am familiar with are in Yorkdale Mall in Toronto and Mall at Millenia in Orlando. Both high end malls. Especially Yorkdale.

It’s not as if Rolex, Breguet, and Patek don’t want to be associated with poor people. They sell their watches where their customers are. There’s a big difference between Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, FL vs 69th Street in Upper Darby, PA. There’s not any multi-multi-millionaires walking around in Upper Darby.

BTW, I think it’s okay for me to pick on Upper Darby because I grew up there…

Such an on point comment. It amazes me what comes out of people’s heads these days. Or I should say their keyboards.

The store wouldn't be there if it didn't sell sufficient watches, companies won't keep a store open if it isn't profitable.

And yes OP you're being snobby.

ROFL my thoughts exactly. I get what the OP is trying to say but if they are selling enough watches and paying less overhead than having a more expensive lease in a more affluent area then they are enjoying a better net profit margin.

If customers shopping for a Tudor decide that’s not the appropriate location for a boutique by not patronizing it, then the free market will sort that out quickly as well.

In case it’s slipped your notice they are only watches. I will give the benefit of the doubt and assume the post is indeed satire and not indeed serious.

Rolex are a super snobby brand and wouldn't be caught dead opening a store in a working class shopping mall.

Part of the reason you like Rolexes is because they're a snobby brand. You may not want to admit that to yourself. Similarly if they were easy to get you wouldn't like them as much either.

Tudor need to make up their mind about what their brand is and who is their target market.

I worked in branding for a long time. This is basic stuff.

I have to go back to the area next week so I'll drop into the store and ask them how are sales compared to their other stores.

Not entirely true. Rolex, Tudor and Cartier were selling watches as fast as they came in the Florida Mall. Rolex and Cartier no longer wanted their products sold in that mall.

No, here’s where you’re wrong. They sell watches in stores where their customers are located. That’s true. For example, there is not going to be a fishing store selling bait and tackle in the middle of a desert. There is some thought and science behind where businesses locate their retail outlets.

But some of your comments are completely off-the-rails in terms of why you think stores are located where they are.

They built a brand new boutique Tudor store in Beverly Hills at the Westfield Mall. This cancels the assertion of Tudor in low class malls.

Watches are for everyone even the "working class". I am sure it doesn't hurt their brand at all as most people have an perception that Tudor is an affordable Rolex alternative.

It's not for you to say that Tudor shouldn't have a store there when there might be people in that area that one day aspire to owning a Tudor watch.

Rolex = Very hard to buy ..
Tudor = Nice and easy to buy …
I know which I prefer, seriously couldn’t care less where they sold them, it doesn’t diminish the watch itself ..

The funny part about this of course is that rolex largely built their rep as a tough tool watch used by skilled laborers like pilots/divers etc lol

Sadly, he’s definitely serious. Um, um, uh, don’t know how to respond. I grew up in a blue collar suburb of Philly. Our shopping center, whose anchor store was Pomeroy’s, holds some wonderful childhood memories. It definitely wasn’t a high end mall, but we loved it. No watch boutiques, unfortunately. I did get my first Timex there, at the age of 9.
OP, working class watch lovers can afford a Tudor, and isn’t’t it wonderful that some can get one at their local mall?

Tudor is Rolex, so clearly they would be caught dead opening a store in this mall. Lordy this thread is hard to read.

Perhaps Tudor's branding strategy is a reputation as a classy, precision, high end timepiece, yet within reach (unlike a Rolex) of the 58% local population who do have a job.
