Why Add a Yacht Master?

A rhetorical, curiosity question, what does it do for me? Why have one?

Currently I have a GMT with all black ceramic bezel, Planet Ocean, have been wearing a Speedmaster on loan and the slate 41mm DJ.

Of those, the GMT is my favorite, and will most likely sell the 41mm DJ if I ever get access to a 36mm that's on my wishlist with the AD.

So what functionality, style, what does the YM do for me? I always want a date on a watch, the Speedmaster being the exception, the blue dial looks nice, not sure about the bezel, and why do people wear them?

Honestly....I just love mine. For some reason it feels more "rolex" to me then other watches, its like a Submariner thats been dialed up a notch. The case is curvy like a daytona, not as boxy as the GMT or Sub. Everyone has their own opinions though. I think alot of people knock on it because of the name, or because its not hyped by social media

My blue dial YM40 was my first Rolex. Just wanted it as soon as I saw it. Still love it now. Have you seen one IRL? Incredibly good looking reference on the wrist. It’s a great size, perfect weight, awesome fit. It also straddles either the formal or casual look supremely well. You may hear the bezel damages easily, but I’ve not experienced that. Having no nickname means it avoids the hype, but my overall impression on here is that there is a lot of underlying love for the YM range.

Looks?? Pretty much the driving force of why anyone would buy a particular Rolex. It’s functional jewelry.

Just curious, but why do you have to be convinced to buy a watch? It's not for you if you don't feel the allure.

This. I will say, I picked up my Rhodium YM from my AD last April, and it has fast become my favorite watch.

I've got the Rhodium myself.

I wear it cuz the wife gave it to me for our 25th.

In addition to the above, I like the PCL. Clean look. It's a rolex that doesn't yell ROLEX, IMOA.

Initially I didn't dig it. Then it grew on me. So it's a keeper.

Personally, I don't think your reference gets enough love, that chocolate dial with the two-tone rose gold bezel and bracelet is stunning!

Subjectively, it is the curvy case that lifts this watch above the more slab sided recent Submariner in my eyes. Yes, much more similar to the modern Daytona. Not as sensuous and curvy as more Vintage 70s / 80s Rolex but as good as we get nowadays. And with all the goodness of the modern bracelets and clasps which are in another league to the engineering possible on the vintage watches.

I just wish they would do the 40mm with an unassuming stainless steel and black dial in which case I would have one. Even better a brushed Titanium case in 40, like that offered by the unobtanium 42mm YM Ti.

Nice shot of a beautiful watch! Reminds me my gone 16622 with blue dial and red date wheel:

My YM blue dial 126622 is one of my first Rolex, and still one of my faves. It's so comfortable I almost forget it's on my wrist, and the blue dial is spectacular in direct sun.

Thanks - it is indeed gorgeous!

I think Mike Morris’s pictures do a better job of showing how the dial really looks though.

This is also true - it’s a fantastic summer watch in the sun.

Other than the dial, the polished numbers & markers on the bezel, the PCL’s, & also the polished bezel edge, really catch the sunlight amazingly well.

The YM is the "rich" guy's sub. I love the rhodium dial YM's... very classy.

I'm a fan of this reference in most any configuration. I don't think it gets much love for whatever reason. Some people may be spooked by scratches to the bezel, especially in the matte area where you are hard pressed to get those scratches out on your own. Threads of that nature come up every so often. Maybe someone has figured it out. If that's not a stumbling block, I'd think it to be a more desirable watch.

I was in Anchorage last week, guy walked through the lobby and sat down next to me and had on a YM II with gold bracelet.

Now that...that was a guy who had on a rich guy's Sub. Not a watch pertaining to the current year lineup, but what a timepiece.

One reason for always turning away from a Submariner is because I already have the Planet Ocean. Sure, not exact copies, but I don't want to compete with it. Browsing the Rolex website, I took another look at YM's, and they are indeed in their category apart from dive watches,

hence, the original question. Some great photos and responses thus far. With regards to availability, where do they fall on the availability scale today? Seems there are 18 or so on Chrono with the blue dial, chocolate dial drops to 8 it looks like. That's just one reference so when it comes to AD's in the United States, somewhat easy, somewhat difficult?

Icon10 This is the perfect summation...

Another in the thread commented "it's like a Submariner thats been dialed up a notch..." and that's pretty much it.

More bling, but not too much IMHO

Talking about the SS/PT YM in my case, the reason why I bought one is because to me personally, it looks fantastic. I wanted one the moment I saw it. Literally fell in love with the thing. I find the YM far more exciting than the standard Sub.

I love that luxurious sophisticated look, along with the attributes of a sports watch. I really appreciate the way the SS YM does that sports-chic blend in a subtle way, not super blingy like a TT Sub for example. I also love the TT, don't get me wrong, for the days I want that "in your face" look. But most of the time, I like a quiet piece.

Basically, to me the SS YM is understated class on the wrist.

Can anyone advise how the current YM wears compared to a 5 digit sub?

It seems to be the overall opinion that the YM wears smaller than the current 6 digit sub, but I have a 14060M that I have been wearing since new and I've been interested if the YM wears similar, smaller, larger etc......thanks all.

I like that "functional jewelry" as opposed to a "tool watch"

Unsure. It doesn’t do anything for me. The name is pretentious, and I don’t have a yacht.
