Servicing of vintage rolexes?

Hey everyone,

I am hopefully going to step into the vintage realm soon with a 1675 or 16750 GMT Master. I have always wanted a vintage rolex with matte dial and acrylic crystal. I decided to "upgrade" recently from my 3 year old Submariner 14060M to a GMT and was initially looking at more modern GMTs. I realized that the prices of vintage GMTs were not so far off as I thought.

The vintage realm comes with the question of service though. Where do I get my future watch serviced so that it is treated with care? I have heard bad stories about RSCs ignoring requests to keep original dials/hands.

I'm located in NJ, close to Manhattan. Is there someone nearby that can service these watches? I have also read about a San Francisco RSC that is more sympathetic to vintage pieces.

What can I expect to pay for a regular movement service on a vintage GMT?

Thanks,
Ian

For just the movement I would say $300 (+ or - $100) plus parts from an Independent with a Rolex parts account.

Thanks, I hope with whatever I buy, it will be in good cosmetic condition so it should only need a movement service and water resistance check at the most.

I took a long time to find someone who I could trust to restore an old DRSD MKll. I did my homework so to speak. I checked all over the place, made calls and looked at references. This site was a motherload of information concerning the restoration of vintage ROLEX's.

After much thought I chose Bob Ridley in Texas, of Watchmakers International. I juuuust sent the watch to him where he'll do his magic. Due to the condition of my watch, there was no alternative...according to his reputation, he's the Grand Poo-Bah of all things restorational-ish.
