Get whatever you want; I’m way past college and I picked this up last month, it’s great.

Welcome.
Since you need it “this week or next” it isn’t about what you want. It’s about the perception of others. Normal for frat guys. Been there, done that. Flavor of the semester, fraternity bragging rights, fleeting, temporary. Classes start next month, correct? Just a guess, but this isn’t money you’ve earned, it’s family money. Nothing wrong with that, I went to college with a few guys from very wealthy families. My only advice-keep the watch you choose (box & papers, bro!). Then focus on keeper friends. When you are many decades beyond college, you will be glad you did. Add the next watch, don’t subtract. Post pics, or it didn’t happen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

OP, read up on intrinsic vs extrinsic motivations. I can guarantee you that whatever watch you buy will not satisfy what you are looking for more than a few months.

Unfortunately a Daytona is a little out of my price range. Otherwise I'd probably snag a black dial 116520. The 116613LN is still a sub date, but with 18k gold with a retail price of ~$5,000 more, why wouldn't it be a little more prestigious than the regular steel? I don't think I've ever seen someone my age with a six digit two tone Rolex.

I think I stopped caring what other people wore, or what I thought people thought of what I wore, when I was around 20-25. But. Everyone's criteria, whatever it is, is valid for them, so there is no wrong/right, IMHO.
My advice, if you like the sub the best, get the sub. It's popular for a reason. Besides, you're only going to be seeing them on your classmates for a limited amount of time anyway. |

It’s your money, buy what you want. But if you are buying based on what your peers think, then you are letting others control your life. Live your life, buy what you like and enjoy it.

Dad advice (not that you asked):
OP, if your goal is one-upping your peers, tell them they all waisted their parents money on Rolex and buy a vintage Speedmaster. Hit up the gym, pick a major with a high probability of economic success, focus on your interpersonal skills, read a lot, limit binge drinking, recognize you’re in a very fun but short period of your life and enjoy the next couple years. Don’t worry about what your friends think. You need to figure out the Rolex that you feel is douchiest and pick that one.

Regardless of what your friends/peers wear, a sub is a great “first” Rolex to build off of. Rugged, great wrist presence, and tons of versatility. Perfect for a college student, IMO.
Not sure what the “Day Date is an old man’s watch” comments are all about? I’m far from an “old man” and rock mine in regular rotation. When the time is right, I highly recommend one for anyone who wants one - incredible watches. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

From reading your post, I don't think you're ready for a purchase this week or the next.
So, wait until you are. ![]() |

There are an infinity number of younger bros with TT subs. It's a classic gift for graduations, fraternity stuff, whatever...which in itself is very, very nice...but not what you are admittedly looking for... You need to go higher up the ROLEX ladder if you really want to show them who's the best! ![]() |

126610: Perfect first Rolex. Consider the 116610 Save a few bucks on older.
116613LN: Two-tone. Gorgeous Watch, Can be worn for casual and dress. 116622: Unique and therefore the best for you. Not a FAN. 18038: Disagree this is for old men. Im 47 and love my 40 Chocolate. Make this your 3rd or 4th Rolex, and 40MM for sure. At a minimum get a newer 6 digit Day Date. Better bracelet. |

47 is an old man to a college kid. Lol. Dont look too deep into my comment. My opinion is it doesnt have the right look for a college kid. To me its much more of a sophisticated watch.

Thomas, good luck to you. I know you didn’t ask for broad life advice, or to be condescended to, but I’d like to say I’m sure you’re a cool enough person without the watch you’re chasing; don’t compete with those campus peacocks on their terms, do this your own way. Slow and steady — the hunt is the best part anyway.
If you need a placeholder while you work out what fancier watch compels and suits you, maybe check out the Seiko SRPE93 ‘turtle’? It looks like the watch Martin Sheen wore in ‘Apocalypse Now’, which I think is a timeless masculine look, and, at around $270 USD, is a cheapy with credibility. As honest as your admission is about wanting a better Rolex than your peers, I would just try to outdo them with ‘cultural capital’ instead. Learn more than them about watches, and you’ll feel better about whatever is on the wrist. (By all means buy a Rolex if you like, but only when you’re obsessing over a particular one.) |

So do determine which is best for you, you really should try to try some on. Hopefully there is an AD with some demo models and/or some stores that sell used Rolex within reasonable travel times. Try some on and look in the mirror. And bring someone along whose tastes you trust. That's my best advice. Because what other people find pleasurable on THEIR wrists will be largely irrelevant to your personal tastes. |
