Tokyo has a paltry 17 in comparison.

Just went to the Rolex site to check out HK. Just completely dotted.

Do people commonly wear them into the public transport as well?

Sure, on the MTR (metro) you can often see several in one carriage. They're everywhere.

I think they also buy a ton of Rolex in HK because there's 1. there's limited opportunity to buy an expensive car given the tiny area, 2. the real estate is so expensive many rent rather than buy.

It's incredible that last year HK was still the 3rd biggest market for swiss luxury watches. It's a city with just 7 million people and no tourists from the mainland. Also with a lot of the wealthy moving out in the last few years, maintaining 3rd is incredible. They have as many or more Rolex ADs there than NYC, LA, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo combined. Next time I get a chance to go it'll be watch spotting heaven.

Are people there just afraid they are perceived as "unsuccessful" if they wear any other brands?

Just read an article talking about gold Rolex popularity there due to it sounding similar to "hard work pays off" or something. It also states blue and WG Rolexes aren't popular there due to it sounding like "hard work and no payoff" and "hard to become successful".

So interesting.

Don't know the exact mentality there, but there is a huge competitive nature about showing wealth in Chinese culture. That's why Rolex has become what it is in China in recent years after a lot of people became wealthy. Hong Kong has been a developed territory for many more years and has had more disposable income to throw at luxury items towards this mentality.

I get more compliments on my Seiko asking if it is a Rolex than I do on the Rolex. It’s an Explorer though so that’s to be expected and suits me just fine.

I wear gold or platinum watches usually and I receive compliments regularly when I go shopping, walking, or out to eat.

I have owned Rolex-branded watches for around 30 years but rarely do anyone comment on them.

In two years with this watch I’m astonished how few people even know what it is. Maybe 3 times people commented, all of them friends.

None.

And I wouldn’t say anything to anyone wearing one either; it’s a bit weird.

I’ve been wearing Rolexes for 28 years. People in Bangkok didn’t really noticed them until recently. The last two years I have people asked about my watches more frequently than the prior 25 + years.

116710LN GMT is quite flashy, it gets noticed and commented on by co-workers (slightly awkward) and friends.

114270 Explorer, I've never had any comments and this suits me just fine, except the ADs don't tend to take me seriously unless I wear the GMT!

People are disappointed when they see that you’re not wearing an Apple Watch like they are.

I don't get compliments these days unless I'm at the Mercedes dealer but prior to my retiring from the airline industry a few years back, I would get compliments on just about every flight from various passengers.

Since I'm known at work as a Rolex collector, I get comments all the time from people asking to see what I'm wearing that day. I guess I along time ago decided to come out of the closet.

Same thing with my platinum DD40. People don't know what it is, but they ask why it's so shiny

My 1675 GMT has been my daily watch for 53 years, recently alternating with my Air King and Omega Speedmaster. As far as I can recall, in all that time my watch has been noticed/commented upon . . . . . . . just twice!

I've only had comments when wearing my Horrids Black Bay, and none whatsoever when wearing a Rolex.
