If you can only have one watch besides Rolex, what would it be and why? Let's make it more realistic and say the budget is $7500.00. There are so many choices, Breguet, Panarai, Patek, IWC, Breitling, Blancpain, etc, etc.

Which one?

At that price point I suggest the following in no particular order. Of course, you mentioned nothing about dress or sport models. My first thought would be to "acquire" some balance and versatility.

1. IWC. Great brand. You could get a vintage style Aquatimer with an in-house movement at that price and well as many others.

2. A Panny of some type. You could get lots of different looks (more watches in a sense) by buying a few different straps.

3. A Breitling of your esthetic liking with a super quartz movement. Nothing wrong with having a bullet-proof, super accurate watch that looks good. They are a nice complement to your mechanical watches and would be great for travel and rough duty and leave you a few thousand toward your next mech. watch.

Actually I believe you could get a Breitling Airwolf AND a Seamaster and not break $7.5k!

With that budget I'd try to find a good discount to afford a PAM 231.

i'd go in the direction of high end quartz (and come in well under budget). either a grand seiko with a 9fxx or citizen chronomaster with the a660. my rolex ak with the addition of one of the aforementioned would keep me pretty happy.

It also depends if you're buying something to keep 100%, or is there an outside chance you may want to re-sell it in the future. The Pam 251 is a beauty, its white dial is gorgeous, but for some reason it is, along with Pam 188 (older Daylight with a white dial) are impossible to sell.

Navitimer, while a wonderful watch, has too many variants. I own one, so I certainly love the watch, but I know if I sell it, I will take a loss (especially now).

IWC is scaring me right now. Everything with the exception of the Big Pilot and Portuguese complications can be found at 30% plus off list - will it rebound? I bought am IWC Ingeneur Chrono, brand-new, box/papers for 55% off! I knew that one was a dud, so I was not worried about the price, as it would be my everyday watch.

Howard's selections are more along the lines with getting a sweet watch as well as something that will retain value. AP and VC are definite winners. Glashutte Original seems to be having some trouble, but it HAS to be temporary - that brand is eternal. Many Europeans who were buying GO, now are wearing Lange, but that doesn't mean anything long-term. And Breguet - well, you know how I feel about those! The Marine Big Date is an excellent choice for the money - but get the one with the black dial, not silver or blue, as it is the latest version. Oh, and don't forget about the XXI

In my humble opinion (and now since I sold the XXI, the opinion is strictly unbiased), don't get the XX - it is a model which has been upgraded, which means it no longer holds the value it did before the XXI came out. However, the XX version in Titanium with carbon fiber dial is cool as hell!

I love the JLC dive watch - just a great look. There are so many watches in that price range. Personally I love Panerai but the black dial ones are the only ones I would buy (IMHO). You could buy a brand new 024 for that price if you like the dive style.

However, you can get SO many great watches pre-owned right now for a great price that will hold value in case you wanted to trade it later or ended up not liking it. It is a great buyers market.

JLC, AP, Breguet, IWC, the list goes on and on...
