Big surprise

Hi everyone,
My folks called me yesterday and asked me to stop by...my mom told me how proud she and pops were of me for going back to school and working on my masters. Long story short, they presented me with a Rolex. I know nothing about these watches except they are really expensive. I've been doing my homework and I think the name of the one I have is a GMT Master II. It has a red and blue number dial and basically one hell of a good looking friking watch. I have always wanted a Rolex and have owned several fake ones from my years living in Manhattan but this one is the real thing. My folks told me to wear it and make good use of it...others say only were it on special ocasions. I teach school, my principal said he loved it and he has one himself but would never wear it to work.

I'm torn, I luv the hell out of my new watch and can hardly take it off long enough to take a shower, but on the other hand I have never had a 6000.00 piece of jewlery on my arm before and don't know the rules? When should I take it off? Can I get it wet? Can I sleep in it? When should I remove it? Will the cyrstal scratch easy? Is it expensive to replace?

I have a Stainless Steel (SS) GMT and I never take it off, work or play. The crystal on the new (latest model) GMT is extremely Hard and apparently can not be scratched but I have not heard of anyone deliberately trying including me! The polished part of the bracelet on the SS does get small scratches which you cant notice unless you look real close or take one of those real nice photos that you see on posts. The watch is rated to 100 meters but as far as I know its case is made to the same specs as the Sub Mariner model, witch is rated to 300M. Either way no problems with a shower or a swim at all. So keep it in pristine condition as may proud owners of such a fine watch do or wear it daily as I do.

Yes, you can scratch it, get it wet, sleep in it, remove it, and it's ridiculously expensive to replace. Congrats on earning it. Now wear it with pride and inspire your students to set a goal, work hard to acheive it, and reap some of the rewards.

What's expensive to replace? $$$?

Insure it and wear it every day (albeit every 5-10 years when you have to have it serviced (tuned up)) for the rest of your life!

Hi Iamnumber1,

Congrats and welcome, I'm patiently waiting for my GMT due this Christmas hehehe, wife is making me wait and she knows I hate waiting :)

Not only is your watch expensive its made to last and endure quite a bit, I've worn my DJ and Sub and many other Rolex's I've owned in the shower, diving you name it, also remember the crystal is scratch proof but can be chipped if you are rough with her, don't let any little ding or scratch scare you, gives the watch personal character :-)

There are many threads on how to look after your Rolex in the general discussion thread, have a read, believe me I have spent many hours reading through many different topics, and have gained so much knowledge considering I've owned Rolex since my first in '94.

You will love it here, many great people with a wealth of information, and there's no better way to get all you need from fellow Rolex owners.

Dont worry he is just having a DIG as we Australians would say. The new GMT watches have the words "GMT MASTER II" written on the dial, first words on the lower half of the face. They are written in green, dark green for the TT version and lighter green for the SS variant. On the older models it was written in white. The very first models only had "GMT" written. Anyway if the watch does not have "GMT Master II" written on the lower face, or "GMT" for the much older watches, its not a Rolex GMT.
