1665 Dial

Not sure if this should be in the general forum, but I've come across an honest-to-God double red that has been tattered beyond belief. Basically everything but the case, crown, bezel and movement will have to be replaced. Any ideas on coming up with a replacement dial. Obviously, I prefer to go through an AD, but do they still sell replacements for the DRSD dial? If so how much am I looking at spending?

There really is no dial. At least, not a functional one. The lume is completely gone and most of the finish is chipped off. There's a part of the R, a single coronet bulb and part of the markings from 10 to 12. That's about it. Using the existing one is not an option. And I haven't purchased it yet. Part of my decision will involve how much I can restore it reasonably.

Finding someone who can redial your existing dial might be an option.

Document that is was a DRSD beforehand, though.

No one will believe you after.

Well, it still has the serial and matching caseback, so I should be able to authenticate it easily enough if I need to establish a provenance. Personally, if I buy it, it'll be for my own enjoyment. I won't really care if anyone believes it.

As for the redial work, do you have any suggestions?

Was it water damaged? How did the dial get so bad?You have many options for a dial.
A redial in my opinion last option
Find a used correct dial they are out there but expensive
A used white dial easily found

Hers´s the best....

....site when researching the DRSD.

http://www.doubleredseadweller.com/index.htm

Also put some pics of the dial if possible on VRF (vintagerolexforum.com)....maybe a better forum for that kind of watch.

Good luck, I hope are able to restore it if you decide to buy the watch.

Regards

David

I really want it to be a Double Red dial. I've heard that Rolex makes replacement dials for them. Any truth to that? As for the damage, I'm not sure. I didn't think to ask; once I examined the movement as saw that it was pristine, it didn't really seem important.

John, as you can see in Ed's site there is a luminova service replacement double red. The problem is getting one in the states. RUSA has not been known to fool with them.

In fact one collector has been told by RUSA they don't exist.
