Explorer due for an update?

I was speaking with my AD about sourcing a 214270 and he told me that they're incredibly difficult to get because the model is no longer being made. In other words, they're either retiring the Explorer (unlikely) or we're going to see an update at Basel this year.

What do you all think? Is my AD just feeding me a line because he can't get me a 214270 or do you think we'll see a new model this year? If Rolex does update the Explorer do you think we'll simply see the same case/dial with a new updated movement, or will they make substantial changes to the design? Can't wait for Basel!

Hmm.....I’m about 97.67463% sure there will be a new Exp 2 for 2021 as it’s that models 50th anniversary, beyond that though...

Can't see them changing such a classic. Hard to find anything to change with this ref.

Explorer due for an update?

Rolex just updated the 214270 in 2016 so I wouldn’t expect a new/replacement model in the near term. And I also don’t expect them to discontinue such a well established model from the portfolio. I think your AD is feeding you a line of nonsense.

Is anyone else hoping that the 216570 gets re-released with all the 216570 specs but with a slightly smaller (i.e., 40mm) and thinner body (like the 16570)?

Maybe movement updates. Aesthetically probably not so much.

I doubt any AD really knows what is going on with the inter workings of Rolex. I highly doubt that the Explorer will be discontinued. I could see a refresh of the movement (maybe something with a longer power reserve) or maybe a classic offering in a 36mm case.

Yes! Would buy it in a heartbeat if they did that.

I think the current model doesn't need updating in any way. But then I would!

Everything gets updated at some point. I'm just glad to already have the model I like the most.

Yes yes yes.. please update it!

Been going on and on about the proportions that are not right on this model. I have owned 114270 which is a tad small and 214270 that is OKish in size but could be smaller/thinner and above all more proportionate to the original shape. The dial feels like a dinner plate on this one. I hope they will give equivalent treatment as the DD40 that now has perfect proportions. New movement with 70h power reserve would be and expected. If they did this I'd call my AD immediately upon release!

It's due an update anyway, was released at Bazel 2010 in the same era as DJII and just had a small but important mid-life update in 2016.

Of course it will not have ceramic bezel, that's would just be ridiculous. PM version could be cool, Platinum with Ice blue dial, that'd bring up the desirability of this watch overall. Maybe too similar with the flagship Pt DD40 though so why not make a rose gold version with a dark dial.

No changes until 2021 when the watch celebrates it's 50th and in 2023 expect a 70th anniversary special to celebrate conquering Mt Everest.

Can't see the need for a bigger power reserve with it being a three hander.

Was thinking the same for Explorer I in 2023 but does Rolex really celebrate numbers like 70 or 60 anniversary? Thought that is something for brands like Omega et al that is even releasing limited editions for 45th anniversaries. They should do something for 75th though.

These are special dates so maybe Rolex will do something, even if all they do is put the Explorer in a colour on the dial for all watches produced in 2023.

All watches with 31 series movements are due for an update. Is it just the movement or something more? We'll have to wait and see.

It's hard to imagine what needs to be " updated " on the Explorer ?

Pretty close to perfect - new movement / as mentioned not necessary
Glidelock clasp - nice but not likely [ would need to scaled down ]

Commemorative editions - Yes , probably - on the dates mentioned

Me thinks your AD is grasping at straws to keep you at bay

Gold dial explorer?
I do like the idea of a steel jubilee explorer.

Explorer owners see no need for updating apparently

Tell him you don't need one of those incredibly difficult to get Explorers and he can just get you a Daytona or Skydweller instead. Also, be sure to let him know he wins the "AD Nonsense of the Week" award.

I would file this under "my AD said.."

Which is just made up nonsense. People on sales floors make things up all the time. Sometimes they hear it from other people and actually believe it, but believe me, it's nonsense most of the time.

No one really knows until Basel. Forget the ceramic bezel on this one, that would ruin the aesthetics, possibly a new movements in store.
