Vintage Seiko Accuracy

Playing around with a few pieces on my timegrapher here. The beat error is a little wide, but this 1962 Seiko Cronos is a great example of how Vintage Seiko watches just keep on going

Hi Adam,
Can you please explain the results a bit.

The first one says 1.9ms for 18,000 beats, what does that mean for loss or gain of seconds per day?

And the second one, the 1964, it says .4ms for 52 degrees, I’m not sure what that means at all.

(I guess I can google timegrapher, let me know and I will)

Hi Kevin,
Ok the 18,000 is the beats-per-hour, and 52 is the lift angle - these two numbers alternate on the display. Different movements require different lift angles, but 52 is pretty standard if you don't happen to know the required lift angle for your movement.

1.9ms is the beat error, which means the balance wheel swings a little unevenly, but not horribly so (anything between 0.0 and 0.9 is good). Amplitude is basically how far around the 360 degrees the balance wheel turns. Over 300 is great, 275 is good, and I'd say 230-240 is acceptable, and anything over 200 is ok if you want the watch to function. (others may disagree, and I'm really talking only about Seiko movements). The "Rate" is the seconds lost or gained per 24 hours (resting dial-up in this case)

That is really cool and nice to see the great shape it is in. I love my Seikomatic, I’ll try to get some shots of it on this week. He might like a cousin to hang out with. Let me know if you’re interested in finding it a new caregiver some day.

I googled the seahorse and Seiko’s and ended up looking at a 1964 Seiko Seahorse which had a great story:

That's an interesting article and a cool watch. I have a 1966 catalog here with a slightly dressier Seahorse next to a 62MAS.

A Seahorse logo was used on the casebacks of early waterproof handwinding models, and a dolphin was used on the back of waterproof automatics.

I'm from January 1964 too and widely worn:

Beats per hour is about 130
Beat error is fairly high (1.3)
Amplitude is still above 280
The rate is not so good, but enough. (-15s/d)

My wife stops once in a while the movement an sets up the exact time newly

Here's another one. A 1972 LM, which has just confirmed its timegrapher numbers by gaining about two seconds over the course of a week on the wrist

No suprises here, in that period seiko produced the worlds most accurate mechanical watches and swept the chronometer awards

My king seiko (while not 0spd, keeps time as well any any of my modern pieces
