GMT II - Crunchy Winding??

I've owned my GMT with the new 3285 movement for about 6 months. Recently when I manually wind the watch it seems to be extra crunchy. Hard to describe and I do not have anything to compare it to but it just seems to not be as smooth as it used to be. Seems like I've read other threads but searched and could not find anything. Any insight?

Thanks

Had the same (I think) with my Explorer and now with the Sub. At first I wasn't sure, but compared to my newer Sub, the windig of my Explorer was a bit 'sandy'. The Sub used to wind butter smooth, but after a while my Sub lost that butter smooth winding as well.

Brought the Explorer in at a Rolex AD to get it checked out, but they had no idea what I was talking about...they said the winding felt normal enough.

You tell me.
A year later both the Sub and Explorer run absolutely fine, albeit with the same sandy crunchy winding.

Experienced the same problem. Think it’s just quirks of the new movement. But of course I’m not a watch making expert. Had an in house one feel the grind feeling and they said it was normal, and of course he had just done recent training so maybe still a bit green too FWIW.

Do a power reserve test and that will tell you all you need to know.

I am sure we had some other posts recently about crunchy winding on the new movements?

I've got a bunch of different Rolex watches and they all feel different when wound. Not particularly good from a quality control point of view but I'm told that it is normal!

All of mine feel different too, but they are all different movements. However, if one 3285 feels different than another 3285, something’s wrong.

It's wound-up, stop winding it.

My 214270 has done this intermittently as well.
Power reserve is intact and accuracy is still +1 spd.
I had thought about bringing to my AD, but if this is fairly normal "fully wound" behavior I guess I'll leave it at that.

When i purchased my new Exporer it was no way as smooth, almost a bit gritty, compared to the silkly smooth 18yo Sub. But if you're worried then perhaps a quick checkin to your local AD might allivieate (or add) to your concerns!

Don't forget on the 32 series the mainspring barrel is made thinner than the 31 series to accommodate the longer mainspring, they are all different suspect your watch is fine.

If a modern GMT is not crunchy, then it's a fake.
My modern Air-king is peanut butter smooth
My CHNR is peanut butter crunchy

FWIW, I find the 32 series movements are less smooth (gritty by comparison) to wind than the 31’s .

+1. I have noticed with the 3255 movement in my DD40 that when its fully wound the clicking is much more prominent then in past Rolex movements I have owned

I suspect that the crunchy winding might be due to the lubrication issues associated with the 32XX series of movements.

But the 31s feel like the jump hand is about to fall off when you turn it, so it's a trade off.
