V Serial Datejust purchased Dec 19 from AD.

Hello. I have a friend who purchased a new Datejust 36 (116203) two tone from an AD in December last year with a V serial number. When checking the serial number it appears that the watch was made in 2008. Is this a common occurrence that AD's sell such old stock? Is a positive or a negative position to be in?

Is it V plus 6 digits or V plus 7?

I can’t imagine an Australian AD selling a V series (circa 2008) new in 2019.

This is the identical watch on C24. First image is gold hands = friend's watch.

I do not have enough posts (10) to submit a link but

google: chrono24 seller ID12691893

Note year of manufacture.

First no internet chart can give a exact date when any Rolex was made only a approx date when the case was stamped between X&Y years. Now single letter 6 number V serials ran from around 2008 well into 2010 possibly longer. Now some of the DJ range are not the fastest sellers, but still strange for any AD to have V serials still in stock.

Is there advantage in having a NOS 10 year old Datejust with new Rolex 5 year warranty or is it simply a 10--12 year old watch?

What possible advantage would there be?

No real advantage or disadvantage. A steel watch doesn't go stale like a loaf of bread might. Rolex doesn't release watches by model-year, like a car does, so anything you hear on a Forum is mostly hearsay and lore. New is new.

The only advantage would be if the AD offered additional discounts because it was NOS.

I had this happen with a Daytona I bought in 2008. AD accidentally misplaced it behind some other boxes in their very large safe. It was thought lost for 4 years and then found. Brand new with stickers. They offered it to me at a significant discount from MSRP which I happily agreed to. As Padi points out, it doesn’t go bad like food so was a great deal for me.

If the OP friend got a discount as well, there is the advantage.

I would think an AD would have to disclose if the watch did not have a random serial number (which eliminated the whole what year was it made discussion) and was a 6 digit serial number verses 7. Maybe not but I would be peeved if I bought it not knowing that up front.

Hope the OP’s friend likes his purchase and gives him years of enjoyment.

Thanks DD. Only statement made by SA was that particular design was no longer available. No discount - no serial number discussion at all. Friend only found out when he came across a Rolex serial number website and checked the number. Appreciate your comments. Thank you.

Wouldn’t it need a service after sitting for 12 years? If the owner decides to resell, market value will also be less even if it’s NOS. Also, even with a full price receipt, I wonder if it throws any kinks into insurance valuation/replacement cost.

I'll bet that you're a lot of fun at parties.

It's a new watch, with a new receipt that proves it's age, regardless of what some Internet chart says, and it's a second-hand story about a guy who has a friend, who likely doesn't spend time on Forums. Not everything revolves around "what if I want to resell", which is a very small percentage of watches in the world.

As to insurance valuation/replacement cost, it's always whatever a new one is selling for, even if yours is 20 years old or more.

Not likely. All watches made in the last 15 years or so have synthetic lubricants that don’t break down or get gummy like they did with previous fossil oils. If it was kept in a moderate temperate climate, the seals as well would be fine.

It will come with a new warranty regardless of the year of manufacture so if the OP’s friend had any issues, it will be covered for the next 5 years from date of sale anyway.
