Tip For Building a Great Watch Collection

I came across this video on youtube I thought it was very interesting.

(Sorry if it's not ok to post links to youtube, please close this topic if that's not appropriate).

https://youtu.be/dMd1k9yaouw?t=118 (skips intro)

Basically, the guy is arguing that we would almost always "gain" in trading a few watches that we've grown indifferent to/that we barely wear, to get one higher end watch that we will really like (i.e. we should prioritize getting the highest quality watches that we can afford, even it means we should own less watches).

This idea resonated with me, as I recently got through a process like this (see https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=718495)

Just wondering what you guys think.

(In other words don't do this:

Absolutely - ive been staying clear of buying any random watch i happen to like. Some of my friends buy literally any watch they like - indie brands etc, and they own in excess of 30-50 watches.

Not my thing, i prefer to treasure and wear each watch like its my only. To that end, i started consolidating my collection and cut down from 8 to 3, ill probably get another 1-2 but thats about it.

I totally agree.

Less is more....I concentrate on buying quality and a complete set.

I see great value in slimming down and concentrating on quality.

My collection is well thought out and I have "trimmed the fat". Each piece in my collection speaks to me in its own way. It doesn't mean that I don't have my favorites. Also, if circumstances or priorities change, there is an order they would drop off, with 2 absolute keepers (16040M/16570 polar).

At this point, would I consolidate to "trade up"? Not likely. $10K is about my ceiling. After that, my value/quality/enjoyment equation no longer adds up. My collection has a nice spread of options, without being excessive. Also, the pieces within it are at a respectable caliber worth my careful consideration before purchasing.

I agree with the YouTuber the OP referenced. However, his cost appetite is A LOT higher than mine!

I can agree... quality over quantity. Every watch i own brings its own value and I enjoy wearing.

It's all about what you can afford. When I was younger and just married and looking to buy a house a Rolex was the last thing on my mind. I've bought Seiko's & Tags before I was able to afford a Rolex. Now I have all the watches I want & I'll just enjoy them all including the cheaper ones.

I have 7 watches right now, so I'm not really a big collector any more (at one point I had over 20). I can say that every watch I have makes me happy when I wear it. I agree with the sentiment that one should get something if they love it, not because they are trying to meet some criteria with collection variety or completeness.
