My new toy—Timegrapher 1000

So all of us on this site are enthusiasts and we demand some good stuff from our watches like running within COSC spec.

So I was curious to see how my watch was running, so I bought one of these Timegrapher 1000 machines. Please do not confuse with another one of my posts about being scammed by buying it directly from China, that is another issue and another day.

So I unpacked it, it really is substantial, it does have some heft to it. I bought this one from Amazon, it was delivered the next day being a Prime member. There is a manual but it stinks. Thanks to YouTube I was able to set it up and use it.

I am still learning the different names like Lift Angle (which is important). So I proceeded to mount my watch on the unit. You can time it at many different positions. I just did at 2 positions, the dial up and the dial down.

It does take a while for the watch to settle in, table vibrations and other distractions are very sensitive to the machine.

I have no interest in opening up the watch to re-calibrate, but I thought it was fun. I took pictures of the watch on the machine and the display. After about 5 minutes, it stayed constant in both positions of losing 2/3 seconds per day.

One more point, I am bringing this machine and my demagnetizer to the NYC GTG in March, so anyone who attends can see if their watch is magnetized and wants to check the timing of their mechanical piece.

Put some blue painters tape on the side of the clamp as it will scratch your case without it.

Cool.

How accurate are these compared to a Witschi?

Presuming that’s a stone countertop, you’ll have issues with extraneous and self-induced vibrations feeding back to the microphone.
Put the stand on a heavy rubber mat, and you’ll isolate the vibrations to those emanating from the watch.

Yes, for sure it will.... thankfully I found out using my Seamaster and not Daytona.

Thanks, put a layer of painters tape on the metal clamp.

Cool device .... I kicked around the idea of getting one but after awhile that urge passed, the reason is I just lay my daily watch down and it’s usually crown up or down and some run 1-2 secs slow a day and send some run 2-3 secs fast and I just can’t see myself resting in various positions to get it closer but none the congrats on your purchase and hope it serves you well

My understanding from reading and listening to YouTube videos they are the same unit, with just some different painted skin. One person reported getting the unit, with the Witschi manual. There probably is one factory in China that makes it for everyone.

What? Wait, no... Witschi are made in Switzerland and run about $3000 starting out. It's the benchmark in timegraphers. I'm sure all the Chinese ones are the same but Witschi aren't in that category.

I was curious how this compares to the real thing.

Now I understand what you are saying.
The Chinese copy, some have “Weishi” printed on them, very close in spelling, ha ha. These are copies of the Witschi but made in China.

I find these type of things like going into the maternity ward while your wife is having a baby. (I have no kids)

Sometimes the magic disappears when you start to look to closely.

And I guess for others the magic is magnified when you get a close look.

I'll stick to my blissful ignorance.

I'm enjoying mine. The rate accuracy is good.

Enjoy. What is the difference between the 1000 and the 1900?

Looks like your rate breaks it down into 10ths, I think mine is whole numbers.

Eepro, I also put some painters tape on the metal clamp, as another poster recommended so as not to scratch up the case. I tried it with the tape and did not affect the timing.

Larger color screen is all I know of. I got a good deal on amazon. I'm using a tiny piece of kapton tape on the metal sensor. Agree there is no effect to the piezo microphone.

Hit stop button and then menu, set the period/interval to 60 seconds.... by averaging over longer time intervals you get more frequency precision.

Assuming run of the mill TCXO components the accuracy (correctness) is on the order of 1 spd but the precision (repeatability for making relative measurements) is 0.2 spd. Over time without center frequency re-calibration the crystal will drift and the accuracy will decrease but the repeatability will remain the same.
