I've been wanting a PP "dress watch" for some time now. I was offered a 5270P, the watch that I have coveted for a while, but I could not stomach the price. I came across a 5905P (a watch that I've really liked) at a reputable grey dealer. We struck a nice deal on the 5905 and thought why not trade one of my "hot" watches. I have loved the 5711R from day 1, but found myself rarely wearing it. I decided to trade the 5711R towards the 5905 and get some cash back.

If you look at the "profit margin" in the 5711R and put that towards the 5905, it's like buying the 5905 under $30k. I personally feel like the 5711R is totally overvalued and the 5905P undervalued at the price I paid.

Does this make me a "flipper" or crazy? Has anyone else out there done anything similar over the past couple years?
I think your actions are fair, reasonable and clever - why not take advantage of the ludicrous overvaluation of Patek's very "ordinary" sports watches to buy a proper Patek.
Well done I say.

As PP sports come back down to earth, more will be wishing they did the same.

You need to be confident about yourself, there is no crystal ball in watch decision.
Unless you know who you are and what, why you need the watch, you are always vulnerable to what people say about your watches;

And price will always move up and up to certain point will come back down; there is so call gravity in everything; including your age, your ability to perform as sportsman, actor, brand name ... everything will move up and eventually come down. And the best predictor of "future price cycle of a brand" is "past price cycle of brand that is similar".

I would say Panerai cycle very similar to Nautilus and Frank Muller/Hublot cycle very similar to Richard Mille. I would be very worried if I am speculating buying at premiums from dealers; especially Patek sport watches and Richard Mille at this moment.

For Rolex, the past has shown, it is bullet proof in every way. Patek dress watch is a stable brand but it is dyeing as the trend today is sport watches, not dress watches. Will the trend reverse? I doubt it would, what I can see there will be a huge tsunami (much more interesting) sport watches with superb features, materials, and complications coming out in 2020 to compete against AP royal oak and Nautilus dominance. The lange odysseus is just tip of the iceberg for the 2020 coming tsunami of luxury steel sport watches - we will see F.P Journe, Vacheron, Breguet, Omega, IWC, Blancpain, JLC coming out with more steel sport watches; some with GMT, Chronograph, Calendar and also different new ultra light, ultra strong materials from other planet; maybe from other stars; Moon or Mars and that was used for special jet engine or car racing and also new with new trendy iconic luxurious design / shape that suits successful sportsman and celebrities in limited production - available only to members of the brand.

If you want a fair price for "Rolex"; you can always consider David S W, the most trusted Rolex dealer in America. I recommend David S W.

i think this is called, taking advantage of the market to get the watch you really want.
I think is a good to feeling when you do this kind of move, those are the occasions that we can say to the market screw you

Exactly this.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with taking one watch to pursue another.

‘Flipper’ is such an overused term. To me a flipper is a person who buys a watch purely to sell. Never wears or enjoys. That’s it.

Go for it!

Your not a flipper, Your a Lover. haha (serious) watch lover. It sounds like a smart move to me. No matter what it is if you don't wear why keep it. Smart on you as well to take advantage of the market instead of the market taking advantage of you. You've got the goods so good for you. Make your move and Enjoy!!...
