Just quoting an article I read yesterday in the Feb (I think) issue of WatchTime. I went into a Borders to try and find the April edition since it features the DSSD on the cover (found out about that from TRF a few days ago...can't stop getting good info from this forum)...they didn't have the April issue, so I just read what they had.

There's a great article written on the history of Ian Flemings Explorer & use of Rolex in his books...check it out. Turns out Fleming wore an Explorer I and that is what the experts believe to be his description of the watch in his novels. You are correct in that he never mentioned a specific model by name, yet the data points to the fact that he was writing about the Explorer on his wrist and NOT a Sub. Interesting stuff. I'm sure there are plenty of members on TRF that subscribe to WatchTime and have already read the article.

Both watches are beautiful and give you a different presence. The Sub is more popular and out sells the SD by a country mile. I happen to like the SD because you see less of them around. Your best bet, as said, is to go to the AD and wear both of them to get a good idea and feel for both watches. Then make your own choice and enjoy the hell out of your purchase!!!

You are correct in saying that Fleming never mentioned a model for Bond's wrist.

I am currently compiling evidence for why I believe it to be a Sub, or possibly a turn-o-graph, and I shall share this with TFR members when it is complete.

Looks like you'll be going up against some heavy hitters that still believe it was the Explorer. WatchTime talked about this guy & his website...as you can see from the main page, he's sticking to his guns that Fleming used his Explorer as his inspiration.

I would pick the Sub date as the daily wearer. It is more comfortable to me, a bit flatter (fits easier under shirt cuffs). I think you just have to try both on and see.

I felt the same way and went for the Sub. I'm not a muscle bound hulk so i found the sub much more comfortable than the SD.

I was in the same position sometime back. I assume you're refering to the SD4000 which I picked over the Submariner, for the following reasons:

1. It's discontinued
2. Looks nicer on smaller wrists
3. The bezel of the SD4000 is thicker and its serrated edges look better.

However, if you're buying new, maybe, you should wait for something from Basel 2009, which is about 12 days away.

both are good watches but still try both on see which 1 smile on you more :) good luck

+1 - I tried both and ended up going with the SD. Sure, I will never go anywhere close to 4000 or even 300 feet but I loved the history of the SD and the fact that it's heavier. I also wasn't a fan of the cyclops so it was an easy decision for me.
